Page 2 T his year, Maine Alpha was recognized for its significant improvements and contributions. We are proud to announce that we received the Excelsior Award for Housing. This award is presented to chapters that foster a safe, healthy living/learning community, thereby supporting an unparalleled membership experience. We were also honored with the Frank J. Ruck Leadership Award. This prestigious award is given to a chapter or individual who demonstrates outstanding campus or community leadership and brings about significant positive changes. This award is a tribute to Frank J. Ruck Jr., Michigan '46, past Grand President, Order of the Golden Heart recipient and former president of the North American Interfraternity Conference. ACADEMIC SUCCESS Last semester, we achieved a chapter GPA of 3.44, and our new members obtained a 3.31. This Spring semester, we set an ambitious goal of achieving a chapter GPA of 3.5. PHILANTHROPIC EFFORTS We raised more than $3,000 for St. Baldrick's, an event that donates all proceeds to childhood cancer research. Many brothers even shaved their heads to help raise awareness for this great cause. We also co-sponsored a Spring into Action Fun Run with Title IX, with 25 brothers either volunteering or running in the race on April 6. More than $1,000 was raised for this event and will go toward raising awareness for sexual assault and supporting survivors. About 20 brothers got together to participate in Bowl for Kids Sake, an event in which all proceeds go to Big Brothers Big Sisters. This event was a lot of fun and the brothers enjoyed themselves while raising around $430. To finish the semester, many brothers gathered to participate in the Zimmerman Fitness Challenge, a great event where contestants undergo several timed physical challenges. We were able to donate $250 toward the event, and all proceeds will support the Zimmerman Memorial Fund, which helps new Marine officers from UMaine. CAMPUS INVOLVEMENT On March 2, more than 30 brothers participated in a campus cleanup, walking around UMaine to pick up trash and debris. RECENT EVENTS On February 2-3, brothers traveled to Parsippany, New Jersey, to participate in the Carlson Leadership Academy. Executive board members honed their leadership skills while younger brothers in the Rising Leaders track learned important skills to become future leaders. On March 1, we had a lock-in where brothers gathered for the night to complete team and leadership-building activities, deepening their bonds. Our spring retreat was held in Smithfield, Maine on April 12-13. Brothers camped out and participated in activities surrounding leadership and sound mind/body activities, working toward becoming more well-balanced men. We are proud of our achievements and look forward to continued growth and development in the coming year.
