The winners must have a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average, have served as a lettered chapter officer for a minimum of one year, and have held a major leadership position on their campus. Three of the awards are given with distinction. The 2013 winners with distinction are: Tyler Boscoe, Tri State '13, chapter "A" and the vice president of the campus student government; Becket Duncan, Missouri State '13, chapter "A," "C," and "E" and president of the Interfraternity Council; and Bill Sterrett, Illinois '14, chapter "A" and president of the Interfraternity Council. There were four other winners of the Borelli Family Leadership Award for 2013. They are: Christopher Berry, Louisiana Tech '14, chapter "E" and vice president of the Interfraternity Council; Kevin Bockerstett, Spring Hill '13, chapter "C" and president of Beta Beta Beta and event supervisor for the Science Olympiad; Don Ebben, Kettering-A '13, chapter "A" and president of Order of Omega and treasurer of the Interfraternity Council; and Nicholas Rangel, Louisiana Tech '14, chapter "B" and Union Board vice president and orientation assistant director. The Washburn Scholarship, sponsored by "AA" Miles Washburn, Massachusetts '87, is awarded annually to brothers that best exemplify what it means to be a Delta Chi, including community involvement and work responsibilities. Chapter involvement, as well as grades and financial need are all considered in selecting the recipients. One of the $500 scholarships was awarded in 2013 to Joseph Kenny, University of SciencesPhiladelphia '15. Kenny is pursuing a degree in physical therapy, which will lead to a doctor of physical therapy degree. The other Washburn Scholarship winner was Andrew Reich, Florida '14, a junior in industrial and systems engineering. Spence Price Supports "A"s' Academy to Build a Solid Foundation for the Future W hile attending Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, Spence Price, Embry Riddle '71, decided to join a local fraternity, Pi Sigma Phi. "I had friends in the fraternity, and in the 1970's there where only four fraternities on campus. I needed a social outlet, even in Daytona Beach, and I enjoyed hanging out with the guys who were in the fraternity." After joining Pi Sigma Phi, Delta Chi approached the local fraternity about joining the international fraternity. "The local chapter had a lot of camaraderie, which was invaluable for someone who didn't know their way around college, and it gave structure to college life." Spence learned many vital leadership lessons as a part of Delta Chi. "I was elected the first president of Delta Chi of Embry Riddle. Anytime you are in that position, it gives you insight that helps you later in life. As president you are running an organization dependent on people volunteering their services. This gives you the opportunity to develop your leadership skills." The experience leading his chapter is why Spence feels it is so important to support the Foundation and the "A"s' Academy. "You've got to develop leadership in young people. School teaches them how to manage, but not how to lead. The foundation is focused on leadership instead of just management. That is one of the largest assets to the Fraternity and the 'A.'" Spence encourages others to support the Foundation to help build a strong leadership foundation. "The 'A' is going to make or break the chapter. If you don't have a strong 'A,' the chapter won't succeed. There are strategies and tactics; without good strategies the tactics will fail. The success of the fraternity is the strategy, and education of the 'A's is the first tactic for the strategy to be successful. It is important to support your alma mater, but also your fraternity after you graduate. It is important to the long-term success of your fraternity." Spence graduated with a bachelor's degree in aviation management and a minor in air science. He works for the Southeast Toyota Distributors, L.L.C. His responsibilities include building body shops and training dealership employees to work with insurance companies and customers. He also provides consulting to 60 Toyota collision centers and works with independent body shops to teach them how to fix Toyotas involved in accidents. He and his wife, Marcia, live in Tampa, Florida, and have one son, Kirk. Spence is a gun enthusiast and enjoys boating, water, and snow skiing when he can. www.dcef.com
