Join Kim Dutton, NWA Director, Nature Conservancy, and Chas McCoy, The Nature Conservancy Watershed Specialist, for a guided tour of the preserve to hear more about the property's conservation value and protection of rare and endangered species. The United States used the Marshall Islands for nuclear testing after World War II and ra- diation has destroyed many of the coral atolls and affected the health of the Marshallese people. A unique migration arrangement led to the diaspora of the Marshallese people with many relocating to Oklahoma and Ar - kansas. Learn of the role that Tyson played in the relocation of numerous Marshallese people and why there are so many living in the Springdale, Arkansas area. One of our finest writers about the American South, Porter lost her mother as a small child and was raised on a Texas farm by her strong-willed, fiercely independent grandmother. A group of stories called "The Old Order" is based on her childhood impressions of race relations and gender roles at a time when the "old order" was under threat. The class will read and discuss this series along with two "short novels," "Old Mortality" and "Pale Horse, Pale Rider," also autobiographical, about a young newspaper reporter who nearly dies from the Spanish flu.
