Join Gilded Age Authors, Nancy Markey and Kay Adams as they explore the lives of the people who lived and worked during this period. This second class in the Gilded Age series will focus on the Vanderbilts and other Robber Barons. Like many of the Robber Barons, the Vanderbilts gained prominence through their shipping and railroad initiatives. The Vander- bilts were one of the wealthiest families in the United States who built grand mansions in New York, summer cottages in Rhode Is- land and various other opulent homes like the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Caro- lina. History records the stress created by economic crisis and war, a stress that was mainly addressed through dance, music and the movies. Swing music was an integral force in all three. Running from 1932 to 1942, the Swing Era took music that had roots in New Orleans with Louis Armstrong and developed it into a sophisticated art form that was, and contin- ues to be, enjoyed by people of all cultures from around the world. In addition to delving into a bit of Ameri- can history, sociology and expressive move- ment, Dr. Gary Barrow, retired Arkansas Tech University professor, will lead classroom lec- tures and group discussion. This fascinating glimpse into the music and lives of the Ameri- cans who created it will include Duke Elling- ton, Count Basie, Harry James, Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, and the Andrews Sisters. Focus will be on groups who have called this region home. Following the presentation, participants are encouraged to visit the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History. The museum explores the lives of early settlers with exhibits and collections incorporated into six historic buildings locat- ed on the grounds. OLLI mem- bers can join forces with NASA's GLOBE program to collect data from your own back yard. Using your Smart Phone and the free GLOBE observer app, collect, enter and analyze data from local and regional areas around the globe. This 2 hour workshop is presented by Lynne Hehr, the former Director for the UA STEM Center/Arkansas NASA Educator Resources Center. This Citizen Science project is easy, worthwhile, and helps NASA scientists around the world explore Earth Systems.
