FIJI Jayhawker 2 We also reimplemented the Brother of the Month award. This honor goes to an Undergraduate who exemplifies the values of a Phi Gam over the course of a month. Our most recent Brother of the Month was Alden Breford '26. He is our freshman Recruitment Chairman and has helped a lot around the Chapter House by cleaning and giving house tours to multiple recruits. Hard work doesn't go unnoticed around here! Find out who the other honorees will be each month on our Instagram page, @kansasfiji. We are continuing to lead the anti-hazing charge as we initiate the Built to Lead program into our Chapter. This program has shown us how to take initiative and be better leaders. See the Chapter President's message on page 3 for more details. Lastly, we would like to thank our former cabinet for the extensive work they put in this past year. Their dedication is one of the reasons why we are still here today. We'd also like to welcome the new cabinet that took over this spring. We know they'll continue to push Pi Deuteron in the right direction going forward. We will press on and finish this year strong, Brothers! Fraternally, Ryan Schaper '25 Head Editor Perge! A Lifetime of Selflessness Honoring the Late Tom Clevenger '57 L oyalty is a pillar of Brotherhood, and Tom Clevenger '57 understood that well from the moment he joined FIJI. Recruited by friends into Pi Deuteron, Tom gained responsibilities while making great memories with Brothers. Early Life From bringing a horse back to FIJI for his pledge class walkout to playing football and swimming, Tom made the most of his undergraduate years. Following graduation, Tom spent three years in the Marines, stationed in various places throughout the world. "Being a pledge made you have responsibilities and duties; [that] followed suit into the Marines," Tom's Brother, Jack '68, said. "Do what you're supposed to do. Put your head down and work. Be loyal." Returning to Kansas Tom moved to Dallas and became Vice President at Republic National Bank before he returned to Topeka to help his father at First National Bank of Topeka. Tom's banking career blossomed into him running the state's second-largest bank and merging with the top bank in Wichita. While Tom's professional life involved other endeavors, like overseeing branches of the Bank Holding Company, serving on various boards, and even winning the Mr. Pittsburg award, he remained selfless and devoted to serving others. Tom even provided John Martin '68 with a banking job—one of many ways he retained FIJI bonds. Lifelong Loyalty Tom's pledge Brothers became lifelong friends, and he was proud to serve on Pi Deuteron's board as a Graduate Brother. When house rebuilding efforts called for financial support, Tom was there to help with loans. Tom knew firsthand just how important the Fraternity experience can be. His FIJI years developed him as a young man ready to serve his country and give back to his communities. Jack is grateful that he and Tom had such great parents that raised them and their brother, Ray, as responsible individuals. Tom and his wife, Linda, were incredibly proud of their late son, John, and their other son, Chris, who now lives in Denver and runs a very successful business, for carrying on the Clevenger tradition of working for a living and helping all. While Tom passed away after a fall in November 2022, he will be forever remembered for his ongoing loyalty in all aspects of life.
