The 2017 Significant Sig winner came to Mizzou in 1965 and was initiated in 1966. F I N D I N G X I X I "The reason I pledged Sigma Chi was because of two guys from high school, Steve Goggin '68 and Mike Ewing '68," says John. "There was a connection. I loved the Norman Shield, the cross, the eagle, and 'In this sign, we will conquer.' I connected with all that." After being initiated along with 13 other members, which was a third of the original pledge class, John felt he was part of a band of brothers. A bond that was stronger than most because of the Sigma Chi connection. As a freshman, John was a member of the freshman baseball team, a pre-med major, and a Harry Tidd Scholarship Award winner (an award he only knew he had won when a man showed up at the house with a check for $100). But while spending time at the legendary Heidelberg, John saw journalism professors and teaching assistants interacting with students outside of class. As a result, he felt inspired to switch to the School of Journalism. E D U CAT I O N B E YO N D T H E C L A S S RO O M "I learned more at The Heidelberg than I did in class." This led him to switch to the School of Journalism, thanks to Tom Marchel '68, who said it was his best bet. Meanwhile, John and his other brothers faced the Vietnam War and military conscription, otherwise known as the draft. "The Vietnam War became part of the environment in college. They're drafting people out of college. They're showing the body count on TV." After receiving notices from his draft board that he was getting close, John and 10 other Sigs went to Kansas City and enrolled in the Army Reserve, which was a six-year obligation. This led to having to do another year at Mizzou and taking some classes in intercession. One of those classes was an advertising sequence class, where John had to put together ad campaigns for companies in the newspaper. "I went out on a Friday afternoon to Wood Link Fence Company, and I proposed an advertising campaign in the Columbia Missourian. By God, the guy bought the whole thing." L I F E A F T E R R E T I R E M E N T John pursued a career in financial services, starting at Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co. as a financial representative in 1971 and retiring as a managing partner after 40 years in 2011. John enjoys spending his post-career time with his family—but not losing to his wife, Kathy, a former Rice University point guard, in pop-a-shot. "It's very humbling, so much so that I don't play her anymore," John admits. He and Kathy have three children, Jamie, Josh, and Madison, and five grandchildren. The youngest, Windsor, was born this past December. John is also active within the Mizzou community. In 2019, John was honored by the Mizzou Alumni Association as a distinguished alumnus. He supports the Tiger Scholarship Fund and Mizzou NIL. He is also involved with the College of Human Environmental Sciences as a Dean's Strategic Leadership Council member. When he is not in St. Louis, John and his family are often in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, enjoying the company of their five dogs, whom are all rescues and have various health issues. John loves keeping up with Mizzou sports, exercising, reading, and enjoying the beautiful settings of the outdoors. "I am amazed at what God has created," he said. "I don't know what I do all day, but it takes me all day to do it." John, who still wears his Sigma Chi ring, says his favorite part about the brotherhood is the lasting connections it has brought him. The value of connections inspired John Qualy to establish a leadership and educational scholarship in honor and memory of his brothers, Bill Qualey '74 and Jim Qualy'79, who have gone to the Chapter Eternal. "To this day, there are probably 30 guys across the country. And let's say we haven't seen each other for two years. You see them, boom, it's like we haven't ever been apart. And that transcends time." John hopes to see leadership from fellow alumni to help get back and keep the Xi Xi house on campus. John and Kathy Qualy with their grandchildren.
