THE TIGER SIG Spring 2023 Page 3 A HUMBLE LEADER Tyler Thomas '25 on Brotherhood, Band, and Business Newly elected Consul Tyler Thomas '25 is our spring 2023 Sig Spotlight. T yler, one of the original five members of the Chapter, has served as Pro Consul and Tribune for the past year. Having two critical positions can be challenging and time-consuming; nevertheless, Thomas says he enjoys it. "There are some challenges," says Tyler, "but I find that every day, persevering and pushing through that makes me a better person and develops more skills for the real world." NEW RESPONSIBILITIES The St. Louis native says being Pro Consul has been rewarding, as he has been able to steer his vision of a Chapter he helped found, but the Tribune position is more his style. "I'm a people person, so getting to connect with alumni is less of a job and more of a privilege." Through the Tribune position, Tyler has had the opportunity to connect with Xi Xi and Sigma Chi alumni in the Columbia area. Being one of the five original members also means a lot to Tyler. He enjoys getting to build the fraternity and putting his twist on things, and he is grateful to be doing it for Sigma Chi. "Different temperaments, talents, and convictions—that was really attractive to me because, my whole life, I've been trying to bring together different types of people … just trying to be more inclusive and a force for unification rather than divisiveness. And I thought we could be that kind of presence within Greek life." A MARCHING MAN When Tyler is not busy with two executive board positions, he often practices with Marching Mizzou, where he plays tenor saxophone. "I was one of the better players and marchers in my high school band, but you get here, and everyone was the best marcher in their band, so that was a bit of a humbling experience. Especially because I am not doing anything music related for studying, so I'm surrounded by these people who are always getting better. That forces me to get better, and that's something I like about it." Tyler and Marching Mizzou had the opportunity to perform in Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade this past November. This was the second national parade Thomas had marched in, the first being the Rose Parade when he was in high school. "It was nice being able to represent Mizzou on a global stage," Tyler shares. PERSONAL INTERESTS Though Tyler lives a busy life with Sigma Chi and Marching Mizzou, he still finds time to be a resident advisor in the dorms. He is also an avid frisbee player and St. Louis Cardinals fan, and he plays the piano. Oh, and he owns a t-shirt business. Tyler is the founder and CEO of Live Sexy Inc., based out of St. Louis. He designs t-shirts and sells them on campus and online. It isn't the most time and cost-efficient business, he admits, but Tyler has made sales in over five states. Tyler is excited about his future as Consul. He says it is an honor to be elected by his Brothers to be the external face of the Chapter. "I am most excited to connect with others around the campus and community and to show off the incredible things we are doing with Sigma Chi." Alumni News Paul Courter '72 and partners formed Perfect Golf Event to help charities plan more successful golf fundraising events. In nine years, organizations have raised more money by utilizing perfectgolfevent.com to make a website that attracts players and sponsors to their event. Paul's program streamlines the planning and management of charity golf events. Clients range from national organization like Folds of Honor, the American Cancer Society, and Boy and Girls Clubs of America to alumni groups including many fraternities, booster clubs, and local non-profits. Perfect Golf Event's focus on education separates it from any competition. They have over 150 education videos on their YouTube channel on how to organize, manage, and promote a golf event. Michael Olszewski '76 completed his 6,000- mile circumnavigation of the Eastern U.S., known as America's Great Loop, onboard his 44- foot power catamaran EXPERIOR. Olszewski and his sweetheart "admiral" Cindy "crossed their wake" on March 24, 2022, in Punta Gorda, Fla. The two-year trek included cruising down the Southwest Florida coast, across Florida through the Okeechobee Waterway, up the East Coast, and through New York Harbor (quite an emotional experience). They proudly flew the Sigma Chi flag from EXPERIOR on several occasions. Mike's experience at Mizzou, Sigma Chi, and Xi Xi certainly helped him prepare for this amazing challenge. The Xi Xi Nu pledge class (fall 2011) has had quite an exciting year. Doc Halliday '15, Johnny Hoffman V '15, Hunter Holman '15, Alex Lindley '15, Dominic Martinez '15, and Chuck Wilson '15 each walked their sweethearts down the aisle this past year.
