Box 442100 Lawrence, KS 66044-2100 Address Service Requested T he sorority, Sigma Sigma Sigma, hosted their 'Sail-abration' on October 1 at the corner of South Joplin and Ford Street to unveil the location of their new sorority house. "Today we are having the Sigma sign 'Sail- abration' because a sailboat is one of our national symbols. We are unveiling the future homesite now that we own this property. The future home of the Chi Chapter when we build our new house," said Cathy Linaweaver, Chi Chapter of Sigma Sigma Sigma Housing Corporation President. The event started at 11 a.m. across the street from the Alumni Center, where a portion of a public park stood previously. "We've been involved for the past two years in a capital campaign raising funds from our alumnae and various organizations. We've raised over $860,000 so far, and we continue to raise money. And we have renderings of our new house already developed to allow us to have a great location and expand the size of our sorority," said Linaweaver. The group has been fundraising for over two years and is expecting the house to take as long to build. "For the people involved like our Housing Corporation, I know they have been really grinding and putting in a lot of hard work. They made it very easy for the women; there hasn't been much stress or really that much involvement on the women's side, so they really take care of us," said Avery Altman, member of Sigma Sigma Sigma and senior in biology and Spanish. The sorority has a variety of reasons for moving out of the house they are currently in. "We have owned our current house for 51 years; it's a great house, but we want to have a better presence on campus. We have quite frankly outgrown our current house," said Linaweaver. "I think I'm just so thankful that we're able to do this and that I was able to be part of it and I'm able to see this whole process. I'm just so grateful for this opportunity," said Lauryn Macy, senior in nursing and president of Sigma Sigma Sigma. Some members were asked what they hope this new house will bring. "I hope that they can incorporate some of the things from the old house that are like traditions and put them in there. Because of the feeling of connecting over and all the memories that were made in that old house, I'm just really excited for the women that get to live together and experience that. You wouldn't want to do it maybe more than once, but it's the best experience of that year. I'm just excited for them to have fun and memories," Altman said.
