T8 WHATS UP! January 15 - 21, 2023 BY RAYE SMITH TV Media WHAT'S NEW ON APPLE TV+ "Truth Be Told" - Season 3 The highly anticipated third sea- son of the Apple TV+ mystery drama "Truth Be Told" makes its debut on the streamer Friday, Jan. 20. Episodes air weekly on Fridays. Based on the novel "While You Were Sleeping" by Kathleen Barber, the series ex- amines America's obsession with true crime podcasts and challenges its viewers to consid- er the consequences when the pursuit of justice is placed on a public stage. The series began by focusing on true crime podcast- er Poppy Parnell (Octavia Spen- cer, "Hidden Figures," 2016), as she tried to solve the mystery surrounding the death of a fami- ly's patriarch. Now, Season 3 finds Poppy frustrated by the lack of media attention for sev- eral young missing Black girls. In order to keep the victims' names in the public eye, all while chasing down leads on a sus- pected sex trafficking ring that may have ensnared them, Poppy teams up with an "unorthodox principal" (per Apple TV+), Eva (Gabrielle Union, "Being Mary Jane"). Created and executive produced by Nichelle Tramble Spellman ("The Good Wife"), Season 3 of "Truth Be Told" is executive produced by Spencer, showrunner Maisha Closson ("Claws"), Mikkel Nørgaard ("Klovn"), Reese Witherspoon ("Wild," 2014), Lauren Neus- tadter ("The Morning Show"), Peter Chernin ("See"), Jenno Topping ("Slumberland," 2022) and Brian Clisham ("Right to Try," 2021). WHAT'S NEW ON PARAMOUNT+ "Are You the One?" - Season 9 Reality TV is heating up once again: Season 9 of the match- making series "Are You the One?" premieres Wednesday, Jan. 18, on Paramount+. As with other hit reality dating series, such as "Too Hot to Handle" and Love Island," "AYTO?" puts love to the test by sending a group of young singles on a 10-week vaca- tion in a luxury vacation house, where every move they make can be tracked on camera 24/7. But this American series is tak- ing the experience global in this new season, as 22 recently single hopefuls from around the world head to Gran Canaria, Spain, hoping to find their "perfect match." A dating algorithm is used to help quantify compati- bility and then identify the ideal pairs among the participants. However, the results are kept se- cret from the singles, and they'll undergo weekly tests as they try to find their ideal mate while they all get to know one another. If they choose the wrong person to couple up with, they'll have to start all over for another week; but if all 11 couples can find their match on the same week, they'll split a massive cash prize. With all barriers removed on gender and sexual identity for the matches, the competitors have the chance to learn about them- selves and who they really love. This season, hosting duties are taken over by relationship ex- pert and TV host Kamie Craw- ford ("Catfish: The TV Show"). The series is produced by ITV Netherlands and MTV Enter- tainment Studios.
