T22 WHATS UP! January 8 - 14, 2023 The Late Show With Stephen Colbert In an effort to destigmatize the disease, the World Health Orga- nization has renamed monkey- pox "mpox." You can't just KFC this thing; it's not like we don't know the 'm' stands for. That's like when the Washington foot- ball team briefly changed their name to the Washington You- Know-Whats. A so-called "zombie virus" has been revived after 50,000 years trapped in the Siberian perma- frost. Hey, science, I've got something for you to study next: why the [bleep] you would do that. There's some news out of Cali- fornia, the Garden State, because yesterday [Nov. 30] San Francis- co voted to let their police force deploy potentially lethal, re- mote-controlled robots in emer- gency situations. … Seems like an obviously bad idea, but the vote was eight in favor and three about to be executed by robots. The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Today [Dec. 1], President Biden hosted French President Em- manuel Macron for the first White House state dinner in more than three years. Yep, the French like to eat late, so Biden was like, "Got it, 4:30 it is." According to new research, self- service checkouts at grocery stores are covered in harmful bacteria. But hey, at least they also never work. For the first time ever, New York City has been named the most expensive city in the world. Things are so expensive, NBC can only afford to plug in the bottom half of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. Things are so expensive, the Statue of Liberty just started an OnlyFans. Jimmy Kimmel Live! The runoff for the Senate in Georgia is on Tuesday and Her- schel [Walker]'s advisers know that their most fearsome enemy is his mouth. His team will not let journalists within 20 feet of Herschel Walker at rallies. … Herschel right now is staying so far away from reporters, you'd think he was their father. White House spokesman An- drew Bates responded [to Trump's post about terminat- ing the constitution] this weekend [Dec. 4]. He said Trump's remarks are an "… anathema to the soul of our na- tion ...," which would have been a sick burn if Trump had any idea what an anathema means. On Dec. 17, at SoFi Stadium here in Los Angeles, the Washington State Cougars will face the Fres- no State Bulldogs in the second annual Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl. … There have been a number of outlets referring to this game as the LA Bowl and leaving my name out of it. I will be suing those people. I have a stack of subpoenas going out tomorrow morning at 6 a.m. Late Night With Seth Meyers President Biden said on Friday [Dec. 1] the Democrats must win the Georgia Senate runoff to avoid a 50-50 split in the cham- ber. "But that would mean the end of my presidency" said Joe Manchin. After she was kicked off a Spirit airlines flight, former New Jer- sey governor Chris Christie's niece, Shannon Epstein, report- edly injured six deputies while resisting arrest, including kick- ing an officer in the groin, which can only mean one thing: she's running [for New Jersey gover- nor]. New York City recently posted a job listing for a Director of Ro- dent Mitigation, which will pay up to $170,000 a year. Wow, $170,000 a year to say, "Maybe don't serve dinner in the gutter." The Late Late Show With James Corden A Bulgarian company has intro- duced a human-sized emotional support teddy bear that's perfect for snuggling. The five-foot-sev- en-inch plush bear is the shape and size of a male human body but has the head of a teddy bear. Usually a grown adult who sleeps with a teddy bear is a red flag, but this ... this is the same. It's a bigger red flag. LATE LAUGHS BY MICHELLE ROSE TV Media From film to TV: Is film leg- end Robert De Niro ("The Irish- man," 2019) coming soon to TV? According to Variety, signs point to yes. The trades paper first broke the news that the two-time Os- car winner is attached to star in "Zero Day," a Netflix limited series from "Narcos" showrun- ner Eric Newman and NBC News president Noah Oppen- heim. Newman, who is also an exec- utive producer of "The Watch- er" and "True Story," has an overall deal at Netflix, and he'll reportedly work with Oppen- heim to pen the script based on the story they wrote with Mi- chael Schmidt. Oppenheim, who has helmed NBC News since 2017, previously wrote screen- plays for "The Maze Runner" (2014), "Jackie" (2016) and "The Divergent Series: Allegiant" (2016). On "Zero Day," he will also be credited as an executive producer, as will De Niro and Jonathan Glickman of Panoram- ic Media. Netflix declined to comment on De Niro's involvement, al- though it seldom comments on projects that are in develop- ment. And details are rather scarce at this time: we know the limited series will be a political thriller and De Niro would play the part of a former U.S. presi- dent. If "Zero Day" gets the formal go-ahead, the project would pro- vide De Niro with his first TV role as the lead and series regu- lar. The "series regular" part is key, because it's not De Niro's first foray into television. While his acting resume largely con- sists of film roles, he scored an Emmy nomination in 2017 for his role in the HBO movie "The Wizard of Lies," in which he played Bernie Madoff, and an- other in 2019 as a producer of "When They See Us." He's also no stranger to the political thriller genre, or to a fictional White House. Fans will recall De Niro playing a close adviser to the scandal-plagued president in "Wag the Dog" (1997). In "Zero Day," De Niro will get to play the role of com- mander-in-chief, albeit one who is no longer in office. Keeping it in the family: "Lopez vs. Lopez" has had its in- augural run on NBC extended. The network recently ordered nine additional episodes of the freshman sitcom starring George Lopez ("The George Lo- pez Show") and his real-life daughter, Mayan ("Mr. Troop Mom," 2009). That brings the total number of Season 1 epi- sodes to 22, which tends to be the standard for series airing on broadcast networks. "Lopez vs. Lopez" is, accord- ing to ABC, "the story of a work- ing-class old-school Latino (George Lopez) who moves in with his modern Gen Z daugh- ter (Mayan Lopez) as they re- build their dysfunctional rela- tionship one argument at a time. It's old vs. new, father vs. daugh- ter, Lopez vs. Lopez." It airs on Fridays, a day when shows don't typically pull in huge numbers in terms of view- ership. Initial airings of "Lopez vs. Lopez" on NBC averaged about 2.28 million viewers, but in the four weeks since its Nov. 4 premiere, the pilot episode alone has drawn 7.6 million viewers across all platforms. And that's good news for both NBC (and streamer Peacock) and the series, which was one of just two pilot comedies to be picked up to series by NBC. "Lopez vs. Lopez" hails from creator/showrunner Debby Wolfe ("The Conners"), who was inspired to create the show after seeing Mayan's post about her family's post-divorce dy- namics on TikTok. "She was re- vealing the sordid details of her parents' divorce … and twerking the entire time!" Wolfe recalled in an interview with Variety. "I was immediately like, 'This is a show.' This Gen Z Latina, un- afraid to call out her boomer fa- ther for bad parenting. Raw and hilarious." FTX endgame: Amazon is partnering with the Russo Brothers — a.k.a. "Avengers: Endgame" (2019) directors Joe and Anthony Russo — on a new limited series that will delve into the world of cryptocurren- cy. Envisioned as an eight-epi- sode limited series, the TV proj- ect hails from its production company, AGBO, and will exam- ine the FTX scandal that saw one of the most well-known cryptocurrency exchanges im- plode and more than $2 billion in funds seemingly vanish. "This is one of the most bra- zen frauds ever committed," the Russo brothers said in a state- ment. "It crosses many sectors — celebrity, politics, academia, tech, criminality, sex, drugs and the future of modern finance. At the centre of it all sits an ex- tremely mysterious figure with complex and potentially dan- gerous motivations. We want to understand why." "Hunters" creator David Weil will write the pilot and serve as an executive producer on this project, which marks his third Amazon series to date. He pre- viously teamed up with the Rus- sos on rewrites for the upcom- ing "Citadel" spy thriller star- ring Richard Madden ("Game of Thrones") and Priyanka Chopra ("Quantico"). Robert De Niro will reportedly star in the Netflix limited series "Zero Day" STARS ON SCREEN
