T22 WHATS UP! September 11 - 17, 2022 The Late Show with Stephen Colbert In recent weeks, [Republican politician Doug] Mastriano has come under fire for his associa- tion with "the far-right social media platform Gab, a safe hav- en for white supremacists, anti- Semites and other extremists." So, it's like Twitter, except — yeah, it's Twitter. It's like Twit- ter. Apparently, the FBI raid [on Mar-a-Lago] was all part of an ongoing investigation launched by the National Archives and Records Administration. That's right, [Trump]'s going to get tak- en down by the librarians! They're coming for you, baby! They're organized, they know where everything is and you never know which way they're coming because they're so quiet. The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Thanks to some big wins in Con- gress, falling gas prices and a stronger economy, President Biden's approval rating has surged three points. That's it?! That's like donating a kidney and getting a text back that says "thx." When Netflix rolls out their cheaper plan ... you get: com- mercial breaks; no downloads; when you try to hit "Skip Intro," it says "Nah"; "Stranger Things" is just the Jonathan scenes; each month they send you a cheese sandwich from the Fyre Festival documentary; when you're with your parents, it automatically plays the show "How to Build a Sex Room"; and finally, it auto- matically shares your password with all of your exes. According to new research, standing desks can improve your well-being and reduce stress at the office. However, lis- tening to your co-worker talk about their standing desk does the complete opposite. Jimmy Kimmel Live! with Nicole Byer I'm your guest host, Nicole Byer. I'm an actress and standup co- median. I host four podcasts, as well as "Wipeout" on TBS and "Nailed It" on Netflix ... [I'm in] "Grand Crew" on NBC and yet, somehow, Jimmy [Kimmel] is the one who needs a vacation. At least one case of polio has been reported in New York City, and health experts believe it could end up here in L.A. very soon. So, that's fun, right? How is polio making a comeback? Polio feels like a disease that you should only be able to catch in a black-and-white movie. Didn't we get rid of polio in, like, the '50s? Why can't we bring back the fun stuff from the '50s, like potato sack races [and] smoking on airplanes? Papa Johns is stripping the top- pings off their pizza for a weird new dish. They're called "Papa Bowls," which are just loose piz- za toppings and cheese — with no crust. ... These are perfect for people who love pizza but wish eating it made them feel like a fe- ral raccoon. According to a new study, there has never been a worse time to be a single man: "Younger and middle-aged men are the loneli- est they've been in generations." ... Now that I think about it, we can't have all these depressed straight guys on the loose; that's how insurrections happen. And murders. And podcasts! Late Night With Seth Meyers A couple in the U.K. recently had a "Back to the Future" (1985) movie-themed wedding, includ- ing a replica of the DeLorean and the creepiest mother/son dance you've ever seen. After singer Adele canceled her Las Vegas residency dates at Caesar's Palace earlier this year, she told her fans yesterday she was "heartbroken to have to can- cel them." On the bright side, that probably means you'll hear a couple of new songs. First lady Dr. Jill Biden was heck- led last week outside of a Con- necticut ice cream shop, but that's what you get when you or- der rum raisin. Newark, New Jersey, set a record [Sunday, July 25] after reaching its fifth day straight of reaching temperatures over 100 degrees. It was so hot in New Jersey, you could bake a ziti on the sidewalk! LATE LAUGHS BY MICHELLE ROSE TV Media 'I'm the Doctor': Fans of "Doctor Who" are a patient lot, given the often-long gaps be- tween seasons, but that patience has always been rewarded. And indeed, good things seem to be on the horizon for fans of the long-running BBC series. Back in May, returning show- runner Russell T. Davies an- nounced Scottish-Rwandan ac- tor Ncuti Gatwa ("Sex Educa- tion") had been selected as the next TARDIS-traveling Time Lord. He'll be taking over for the current Doctor, Jodie Whittaker, whose four-year tenure ends next month with a 90-minute episode that is part of BBC's cen- tenary celebrations (hence its ti- tle, "Centenary Special"). "Ncuti dazzled us, seized hold of the Doctor and owned those TARDIS keys in seconds," Da- vies stated when Gatwa's casting was announced. "It's an honor to work with him, and a hoot. I can't wait to get started. I'm sure you're dying to know more, but we're rationing ourselves for now, with the wonderful Jodie's epic finale yet to come. But I promise you, 2023 will be spec- tacular!" It was recently announced that Gatwa's first season as the 14th incarnation of the Doctor should begin filming this No- vember, though it's unlikely to air until 2024 (sorry, fans). However, there has been spec- ulation that the BAFTA winner might make an appearance in the 60th anniversary special planned for 2023. The special will bring back former compan- ions Bernard Cribbins and Cath- erine Tate (aka Donna Noble), as well as David Tennant, who played The Tenth Doctor under Davies' original stewardship (2005-10). The special will also feature Neil Patrick Harris ("Uncou- pled") as "the greatest enemy the Doctor has ever faced," and his comments may have sparked much of the speculation that Tennant's incarnation may re- generate into Gatwa's, according to The Hollywood Reporter (which also speculated that there may actually be up to three specials in the works). "I got to meet and interact with him a bit and he's glorious," teased Harris in a recent "Just for Variety" podcast. He went on to casually drop the big news that "Doctor Who's" first Black lead will also be "the first gay Doctor, which is going to be super cool — a sexier Doctor." Deep Wood: Season 2 of "Yellowjackets" was scheduled to begin filming a few weeks ago and its cast will include one new, but very familiar, face. "Lord of the Rings" alumnus Elijah Wood (yes, Frodo Baggins himself) is set to play a season- long guest role in the Emmy- nominated drama about the sur- vivors of a plane crash and their experiences while stranded deep in the Ontario wilderness (though many of the scenes in Season 1 were shot in and near Vancouver, British Columbia). Showtime hasn't revealed many details, but it did say that Wood will star as Walter, a dedi- cated citizen detective who will challenge present-day Misty (played by Christina Ricci, "Casper," 1995) in ways she won't see coming. Wood isn't the only new face in Season 2, either. Simone Kessell, who played Breha Organa (Princess Leia's adoptive mother) in Disney+'s "Obi-Wan Kenobi," will play the adult version of Lottie Mat- thews; Courtney Eaton ("Line of Duty," 2019), who plays the teen version of Lottie, has been upped to series regular. Aidan returns: Will he or won't he? "Sex and the City" fans have been wondering if Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker, "Hocus Pocus," 1993) and her one-time fiancé Aidan Shaw (John Corbett, "Serendipity," 2001) would ever cross paths again, especially after that (un- likely) run-in in Abu Dhabi in the second "Sex and the City" movie (2010). In 2021, Corbett told Page Six that he had agreed to reprise his role in HBO Max's "And Just Like That…" and that "I might be in quite a few" episodes. But ac- cording to Parker, Corbett was just joking around, and fellow executive producer Michael Pat- rick King later commented that affable Aidan's return was never really part of the plan for Season 1. "This season was a lot," King said in an interview with Peo- ple. "We wanted to get her [Car- rie] through this and into the light ... We wanted to get her out. [Aidan's return] is a big story- line that everybody at home wrote that we had never intend- ed." Things might be different for Season 2, however. According to Deadline, Cor- bett's laid-back furniture maker will not only be reunited with his on-off girlfriend, but the ac- tor is also "set for a substantial, multi-episode arc." That said, reps for both HBO Max and Corbett did not com- ment on the story, so viewers will have to wait and see how/if the reunion will play out on- screen. In the meantime, Corbett fans can expect to see him reprise an- other iconic role in the third "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" movie, which recently wrapped pro- duction in Greece.
