September 11 - 17, 2022 WHATS UP! T11 A: Unfortunately, you mostly have to look across an ocean to see Natasia Demetriou's larger body of work. The shows that made her a star are a little hard to find over here — they're the sorts of Brit- ish sitcoms that don't often get picked up elsewhere. If you're going to put the effort in, you should start with "Stath Lets Flats," a sitcom starring her and her brother, Jamie Demetri- ou ("The Afterparty"). It had a pretty long run by British stan- dards — 18 episodes — and for- tunately can be found on some North American streaming plat- forms. She also did a sketch series (with "Stath Lets Flats" co-star Ellie White) called "Ellie & Na- tasia." That offers more Deme- triou per minute but is harder to find. She did do one other notable North American production that you can find without much trouble. She (and Jamie) had cameos as catty stage directors in the 2020 comedy film "Euro- vision Song Contest: The Song of Fire Saga." That might not seem like much, but starring in "What We Do in the Shadows," one of the most popular and critically ac- claimed shows currently on TV, keeps her pretty busy. Fortunately, it will continue to do so for a while. Season 4 just finished airing and the series has already been renewed by FX for two more seasons. Q: I've heard the Simon Pegg/Nick Frost comedy movies, starting with "Shaun of the Dead," referred to as the Cornetto Trilogy. Why is that? A: According to director/writ- er Edgar Wright, it started as a hangover cure that turned into a scheme to get free ice cream — and has nothing to do with the plot. In an interview with Vanity Fair magazine, Wright said he gave Simon Pegg's ("Star Trek," 2009) character a strawberry Cornetto (an Italian ice cream brand) to eat in 2004's "Shaun of the Dead" as a little nod to his own time in art college, when he used to faithfully eat Cornettos as a way to cure hangovers. He later tweeted that they gave out free strawberry Cornet- tos at the film's after party, so he decided to feature Cornettos again in 2007's "Hot Fuzz," the next film he made, starring with Pegg and Nick Frost ("Truth Seekers"), hoping they'd get more free ice cream. They didn't, but a tradition was established by that point, so Wright included a Cornetto scene again in their third film to- gether, 2013's "The World's End." Other than the stars and simi- lar comedy style, nothing actual- ly unites the three films besides the ice cream. Thus it became the Cornetto Trilogy. That all seems pretty haphaz- ard, but Wright is still a very careful filmmaker and he ex- tended that care to these seem- ingly insignificant details. SlashFilm.com points out that the flavor of Cornetto used actu- ally corresponds to the films' color schemes: strawberry/red for "Shaun of the Dead," classic/ blue in "Hot Fuzz" and mint/ green in "The World's End." That's the kind of detail you get when your director attended art school. Have a question? Email us at questions@tvtabloid.com. Please include your name and town. A: Beloved '90s supporting star Reginald VelJohnson had a bit of a career renaissance dur- ing the pandemic. While some of that nostalgia-fueled interest seems to have just as quickly faded, VelJohnson himself is still going strong. His most notable recent role was in the 2021 Disney+ series "Turner & Hooch," a revival of the 1989 big-screen film of the same name. He reprised his role from the original film, in which he played a cop and the partner of the titular Turner (Tom Hanks, "Elvis," 2022). Unfortu- nately, it was canceled after just one season. A year earlier, he appeared in an oddball indie film called "The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee." He was playing him- self in a role that, again, refer- enced his '80s film work — this time 1986's "Crocodile Dundee." The fact that neither of these titles did very well is a little bit surprising because people were really primed for that sort of nostalgic comedy. A Nielsen study found that, locked down and seeking comfort, people re- watched old comedies in huge numbers during the first year of the pandemic. In fact, no show benefited from this more than "Family Matters," which originally ran from 1989-98 and starred Vel- Johnson as the Winslow family patriarch. According to Nielsen numbers, that show experi- enced a near-400% jump in viewership in 2020. VelJohnson will be back on screens again this December in a Hallmark Christmas movie, "Ghosts of Christmas Always." Not much is known about it, ex- cept that it will star former "Bold and the Beautiful" actress Kim Matula (and that it will be heartwarming). VelJohnson is, of course, al- ready a holiday fixture for many, thanks to his supporting role as Sgt. Al Powell in the much-debated Christmas mov- ies "Die Hard" (1988) and "Die Hard 2" (1990). Q: I love the actress who plays Nadja on "What We Do in the Shadows." Where else can I see her?
