But, few may have knowledge of other arkansas musicians who were house- hold names in their times with careers that promoted musical styles including folk, gos- pel, jump blues, and rock and roll. in addition to Cash and Campbell, the fascinating lives and music of american music legends Jimmy Driftwood (timbo), sister rosetta tharpe (Cotton Plant), louis Jordan (Brinkley), and levon helm (turkey scratch) will be explored through a review and discussion of these art- ists' musical legacies. Dr. gary Barrow, Professor of Music at ar- kansas tech university, will make exten- sive use of archival audio and video files with classroom activities that will place the work of these artists in the context of key historical events and socio-cultural trends. instruCtor: Dr. gary Barrow DAy/DAte: Wednesdays, 11/2/22 - 11/9/22 (2) time: 10:00 aM - 12:00 PM FormAt: in-Person LoCAtion: DraKe Cost: $39.00 olli Member $54.00 non-olli Member PresCriBeD Fire in the ozArKs DesCriPtion: When one hears of a fire, the first thought is destruction, not a way to restore health to ecosystems. the ozark na- tional forest, managed by the u.s. forest ser- vice, has used prescribed fire for quite a time as a management tool throughout the forest. in his presentation, tim nutley with over 20 years' experience in prescribed fires and wildfire suppression with the u.s. forest service, will explain why pre- scribed fire is increasingly used by the u.s. forest service, why it is a good tech- nique and how the areas are selected to burn. instruCtor: tim nutley DAy/DAte: Wednesday, 11/2/22 (1) time: 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM FormAt: in-Person LoCAtion: DraKe Cost: $25.00 olli Member $40.00 non-olli Member the FALL oF King DAViD DesCriPtion: according to the he- brew Bible, David was the greatest of all isra- elite kings and a man after god's own heart (cf. 1 Samuel 13:14). David unified the israel- ite tribes (if only for two generations), trans- formed Judah and israel into a minor empire, and established a dynasty that survived more than 400 years, one of the longest dynasties in world history. his presence is felt through- out the hebrew Bible, and his legacy con- tinues into the new testament, where Jesus Christ is proclaimed a descendant of David. in this course, Dr. spencer allen, biblical scholar and instructor of international relations at the university of arkansas, explores the fall of David from beloved king to aging warrior, constantly strug- gling to keep his own throne from his homicidal (and often fratricidal and regi- cidal) sons. David's fall begins and ends with the so- called Bathsheba affair (2 Samuel 11-12 and 1 Kings 1-2), which will be covered during week one. the next week we will cover his time fighting to hold onto his kingdom from his usurper son, absalom (2 Samuel 13-19.) During our final week, we will include the various rebellions and revolts that challenge his dynastic legacy (2 Samuel 20-24 and 1 Kings 11-12.) instruCtor: Dr . spencer allen DAy/DAte: thursdays, 11/3/22 - 11/17/22 (3) time: 9:30 aM - 11:30 aM FormAt: in-Person LoCAtion: DraKe Cost: $39.00 olli Member $54.00 non-olli Member DrinKing in the ozArKs: rAmo D'oLiVio DesCriPtion: Chef erin rowe will be taking participants to a brewery this fall that is another favorite of northwest arkansas, ramo d'olivio, a wine and olive oil bar locat- ed in Bentonville, arkansas. try flights of your favorite beverages in a formative and fun ex- perience. a notice of where to meet will be sent to participants in an email a few days prior to the event. *Cost of food and beverage is on your own and not included in cost of activity.
