Amateur Radio "Field Day" June 25 and 26 Focused on Skill, Service, Science Members of the Desert Amateur Radio Club participated in the na- tional amateur radio Field Day exercise, June 25 – 26 at Quail Run RV park, 918 N Central Blvd, Quartzsite, AZ. Since 1933, ham ra- dio operators across North America have established temporary ham radio stations in public locations during Field Day to showcase the science and skill of amateur radio. This event was open to the public and there was a nice turnout. Field Day is a showcase for how amateur radio works reliably under any conditions from almost any loca- tion to create an independent com- munications network. "Ham radio functions completely independent of the Internet or cell phone infra- structure, can interface with laptops or smartphones, and can be set up almost anywhere in minutes. That's the beauty of amateur radio during a communications outage," says Bob Inderbitzen, NQ1R, spokesperson for ARRL The national association for Amateur Radio®, (www.arrl. org), which represents amateur (or "ham") radio operators across the country. "In today's electronic do- it-yourself (DIY) environment, ham radio remains one of the best ways for people to learn about electron- ics, physics, meteorology, and nu- merous other scientifi c disciplines, and is a huge asset to any commu- nity during disasters or emergen- cies if the standard communication infrastructure goes down," Inder- bitzen adds. Anyone may become a licensed amateur radio operator. There are more than 750,000 licensed hams in the United States, as young as 9 and as old as 100. And with clubs such as Desert Amateur Radio Club, it's easy for anybody to get involved right here in La Paz Coun- ty. For more information about Field Day or amateur radio, con- tact Cass at 520-909-2706 or email deserthams@gmail.com or visit www.arrl.org/what-is-ham-radio. Local HAMS hold Field Day The fi rst day of school will be Monday, August 1st. Quartzsite Elementary School District (QES) will be providing ALL necessary school supplies this year. The only item the District is short on supply are back-packs so we do suggest purchasing a back-pack for your student(s). Other than that, we will be providing everything from Art supplies to Zippered pencil pouches and everything in between. The Salvation Army Service Center in Quartzsite does have back-packs for students. Please call them and schedule a time that you and your child can come in to pick one out. (928) 927-3636.
