A Time to Reflect and Discover Brothers Engage in Leadership Courses to Enhance Their Lives T he Greg Stein Brotherhood Weekend offered a unique opportunity for alumni and undergraduates to attend leadership courses, including Discovery XP Lite (for alumni) and Make Your Move and Maximize Your Life. All were well attended and received numerous praises from the brothers. DISCOVERY XP LITE The Discovery XP Lite material was developed and presented by Dr. Michael Brown, an experienced life coach who supports campus sports teams at Bowling Green University. He is also a consultant for businesses, professional athletes, and Phi Kappa Theta. The session was split into two modules, with the first focusing on discovering yourself. Dr. Brown had everyone reflect on the Twelve Dimensions of Life: Personal, Physical, Emotional, Relational, Intellectual, Spiritual, Moral, Professional, Cultural, Recreational, Financial, and Sexual. The discussions went in-depth on many of these concepts and often intertwined personal experiences that were shared with the group. The second session focused on developing yourself. "The session was enlightening and gave me inspiration to be my best self. It made me think twice about how I live my life. I would recommend this course to everyone!" Tom Mercer '89 said. The course was conversational, but the dimensions provided structure. "Intentionality was a recurring theme throughout the course. All those involved would name this as the key takeaway word. Dr. Brown was big on driving the point that what is in your control is making your next choice. Choices become habits, habits develop into routines and, over time, routine appears as change. Don't set out to change, but rather focus on choices that align with your desired outcome," Cory Millmier '12 said. The course discussed the four phases of life and where we felt we fell into the spectrum based on age and life experiences. First, we learn, then we develop and grow, then we inspire and leave a legacy. "This was an impactful part of the discussion as many of the participants are curious how they are going to spend their retirement years and where they can find a passion or make an impact," Cory said. Participation in the course ranged from those in their early thirties to those approaching retirement. Iowa Xi alumni Dan Ahern '85, Tom Mercer '89, Joe Rude '81, and Chris Mote '88 shared thoughts and great perspectives during this part of the session. Dr. Brown is on retainer with the National Fraternity and hosts getaway weekends where the course goes deeper into the topics covered and there is more time for individual meetings with him. "I would highly consider going to one in the future if the date worked out," Cory said. MAKE YOUR MOVE AND MAXIMIZE YOUR LIFE The core curriculum of Make Your Move and Maximize Your Life is geared toward undergraduates and part of the Boysie Bollinger Leadership Academy. Make Your Move focused on envisioning your possibilities, examining your problems, exploring your potential, and executing your plan. Feedback shared about the curriculum included: "I've learned a lot about myself and my peers and how we can go about improving ourselves as a whole by acknowledging our strengths and weaknesses." "I really was able to think deeply about how I can help my fraternity, and I learned a lot about myself as an individual. I also learned the general attitude that the future leaders of this chapter have toward where we want this house to go." "This has taught me to start being a difference-maker to those around me. I want to create positive change now." "I learned to be more honest with myself and to have the drive to do something about the changes I want to see in my life." "One thing that mattered was being honest with each other about things we are struggling with." "Andy and his team did a tremendous job preparing such a great interactive presentation for us. His messages have certainly left an impact with all the undergraduates, and we look forward to applying those lessons to our lives moving forward." Discovery XP breakout session for alumni Undergraduate brothers learn valuable lessons on how to explore their potential during the Make Your Move and Maximize Your Life breakout session.
