WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM JULY 13 - 19, 2022 UCW 19 FTCC provides free mental health program for students by DR. CASEY GROOVER e COVID-19 pandemic presented many chal- lenges for students. With schools and colleges moving classes online, students were cut off from friends and staff trained to help them navigate the changes in their lives and manage negative feelings and thoughts. e U.S. Surgeon General has described the pandemic-related disruptions as a "youth mental health crisis." To address the crisis in our commu- nity, Fayetteville Technical Community College has increased the resources available to support the mental health of students, faculty and staff. e college has a Behavioral Assessment Team to offer quick referrals to mental health professionals for students, faculty and staff. e team also pro- vides mental health support and resources to stu- dents, faculty and staff. BAT members also educate faculty and staff about behavioral warning signs, when and how to report uncommon, dangerous or threatening behaviors, classify the level of threaten- ing or dangerous behaviors and handle threatening or disruptive situations. FTCC provides a free mental health program to students that is available around the clock, 365 days a year. e program is called Reaching Out for Counseling Services; it offers free, confidential counseling. Here are a few concerns that can be addressed through the ROCS program: family conflict, goal setting, relationship issues, grief and loss, anxiety, depression, legal and financial issues, alcohol and drug abuse and school- related issues. ere is no cost to students who use ROCS. Counseling sessions can occur through phone calls, virtual meetings or face-to-face visits with licensed counselors and professionals. Additionally, students can access digital resources through their phones or devices by clicking on a portal link on FTCC's website: https://www. faytechcc.edu/campus-life/counseling- services/reaching-out-for-counseling-services/. An app called MYgroup, provides immediate access to ROCS support and tools, such as interac- tive learning modules and self-help articles, as well as direction to in-the-moment support for more distressing issues. More information about the app is available at the ROCS link listed above. FTCC also offers a free Employee and Student Assistance Program. ESAP allows all faculty, staff and students to access mental health therapy with a licensed clinical mental health counselor. Coun- selors work collaboratively with the college to set up appointments and referrals. Individuals utilizing the ESAP are offered counsel- ors who are dedicated to identifying and resolving interpersonal and intrapersonal matters, domestic and sexual violence, academic stresses and many other cognitive or emotional issues. All counseling sessions are confidential, and the records are not shared with anyone at the college. FTCC also provides special information each month focused on mental health. Information is posted on the ROCS page on the college's website.
