July 3 - 9, 2022 WHATS UP! T11 together the script and music for the movie, he was relatively un- known. The producers had already decided they wanted to shape Powerline partly in funk-pop megastar Prince's image. One of the reasons they chose Camp- bell was because he'd worked with the artist in the past. Ac- cording to music associate pro- ducer Bambi Moe, Campbell was known at the time as "Prince's protégé." Having chosen to hire some- one who had worked so closely with Prince (as well as other R&B greats such as Quincy Jones), they had to provide him with a song that was at that level. So, to produce the track itself, they approached Prince's long- time producer and recording en- gineer, David Z. That led to an even more direct Prince connec- tion. "When [David] said yes, I liter- ally thought I was going to faint," Moe said in an interview with SlashFilm.com. "Because he sug- gested immediately that we re- cord the tracks at Paisley Park. So for me, as a music person, that's like – getting to work at Paisley Park? Where Prince cre- ates? That's unbelievable!" (Pais- ley Park was Prince's own lavish estate and production studio.) With the team in place, they were able to bring Powerline to life and eventually create the concert scene that forms the film's climax. It was something of a climax for Campbell himself. His career fizzled shortly after "A Goofy Movie" came out, with subse- quent albums failing to find the same success as his early-'90s work. He's still working today, though, so there's always hope for a comeback. Q: So many of the stars of "Taxi" went on to big things, but what about the guy who played Bobby? I don't know if I've seen him in anything else. A: Jeff Conaway certainly went on to more things, but not all of them were big. His most notable post-"Taxi" roles were as security officer Zack Allan on the cult-favorite sci-fi series "Babylon 5" from 1994 to 1998 (plus a subsequent TV movie in 1999) and as Mick Savage on the long-running soap "The Bold and the Beautiful" from 1989 to 1990. Conaway is actually better known for the big thing he did before "Taxi" — he played Kenickie, the secondary male lead, in the 1978 film adaptation of the Broadway hit "Grease." Of the central "Taxi" cast, Conaway certainly had the hardest time after he left the show, at least partly because of the "Grease" role. It was the one he could never quite live down. There are certainly shades of Kenickie in leather jacket-wear- ing Bobby on "Taxi," and his subsequent work included vari- ous attempts to regain his heart- throb status in B-movies such as 1993's "Sunset Strip" and 1992's "Almost Pregnant." Sadly, he eventually became addicted to painkillers and his career fell apart. His most nota- ble late-career role was on VH1's "Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew" in 2008, telling the world about his addiction struggles. Conaway died in 2011. Have a question? Advance Pest Control 2 x 2 TAKE 5 BY ADAM THOMLISON TV Media Q: What ever happened to Amy Brenneman? I lost sight of her after "Private Prac- tice." A: Though you may not have seen all her stuff, Amy Brenneman has in fact been a near-constant presence on TV screens since the debut of "Judg- ing Amy" in 1999. Notwithstanding a supporting role on the first season of "NYPD Blue" in 1993, CBS's fam- ily-friendly legal drama "Judging Amy" was her breakout role — it was her first lead and the gig that put her on the map. It ended in 2005, and by 2007 she was starring in another prime-time hit, "Private Prac- tice." That ran until 2013, after which she booked a role on HBO's "The Leftovers," which ran from 2014 to 2017. She then followed that with an eight-epi- sode stint on the third season of Amazon Prime's "Goliath" in 2019. Brenneman took 2020 off be- fore embarking on what might be her most ambitious period yet; one which began with a leading role in Prime's "Tell Me Your Secrets" in 2021 and then "Shining Girls" on Apple TV+. Her latest series, "The Old Man" on FX, just debuted a couple of weeks ago. All three of these new shows have yet to be renewed or offi- cially canceled, so any one of them could come back and be Brenneman's next big hit. Between all of these have been numerous guest spots and big- screen films. While she has yet to get back to the level of fame she reached with "Judging Amy," one could make the case that Brenneman is one of the hard- est-working people in the TV biz. Q: Who voiced Powerline in "A Goofy Movie"? He sounds like Prince. A: That was very much the point. The real singer behind Power- line, the "biggest rock star on the planet," according to Goofy's son Max in "A Goofy Movie" (1995), is Tevin Campbell. By the time the movie came out, R&B singer Campbell was an established star with multiple Grammy nominations to his name. But at the time the "Goofy Movie" producers were putting Amy Brenneman in "The Leftovers" HOLLYWOOD Q&A Solution on page T23 Use the clues above and beside the grid to fill in the squares www.advancepestcontrolnwa.com Family Owned, Competitively Priced, Quality Service Since 1981 Rogers 479-636-5590 Springdale 479-756-1788 Eureka Springs 479-253-8967 PEST CONTROL TERMITE FERTILIZATION WEED CONTROL PRE-EMERGENTS
