T22 WHATS UP! June 5 - 11, 2022 The Late Show with Stephen Colbert After pandemic upheavals, to- morrow [May 7] will see what's being called a "normal Kentucky Derby." So, tiny men on giant horses being screamed at by drunk women in enormous hats. You know, normal. Just because things are opening up doesn't mean COVID isn't still serious. Researchers recent- ly announced that severe COV- ID can age the brain by 20 years. Now, if you're wondering, one sign your brain has aged 20 years [is] you've recently started watching CBS. Welcome. Re- member: drink plenty of fluids, watch plenty of "Blue Bloods." [The Wall Street Journal report- ed that] "many NFT owners are finding their investments are worth significantly less than when they bought them." ... An NFT of the first tweet from Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey sold in March 2021 for $2.9 mil- lion, but when it went up for auction recently, the highest bid came in at $277. Wow! I have not seen anything lose value that quickly since Kevin Spacey's Os- cars. The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Today Biden was back in Wash- ington, where he [co-]hosted a virtual COVID summit. The fact that the summit was held virtu- ally pretty much tells you how we're doing in the fight against COVID. Nike has accused the retail web- site StockX of selling counterfeit versions of their shoes. Appar- ently, people were angry to hear that they dropped $300 on a pair of Air Gordons. Today [May 11] President Biden visited a farm in Illinois, where he announced new steps to fight rising food costs and inflation. You know your presidency is in rough shape when your staff is like, "It's time to drive you to a farm upstate." The Late Late Show With James Corden According to a new poll, half of Americans think life in France is better than life in the United States. They even admit that they fantasize about living in France. To which French people were like, "What a coincidence! We think we're better than you guys, too!" Today [May 9] was the official state opening of Parliament in London, and for the first time ever, Prince Charles delivered the speech in the Queen's place. ... The Queen has only missed the event twice in her reign: in 1959 and in 1963, both times while she was pregnant. So, con- gratulations, Your Majesty! Jimmy Kimmel Live! The Spanish government is ex- pected to pass a new law that would give women three days of "menstrual leave" every four weeks if they're in pain and need to stay home from work. Which, on the one hand is very consid- erate, but on the other it's gonna be a little bit odd for everyone in the office to know when it's Ga- briela's time of the month, isn't it? In an attempt to be inclusive, Mattel is rolling out Barbie dolls with various physical con- ditions. One of those condi- tions is hearing loss, which means Barbie will come with hearing aids. Which is an amaz- ing step towards inclusion that your child will immediately swallow. Late Night With Seth Meyers President Biden criticized Re- publicans at a fundraiser last night for their recent attacks on Disney and said, "They're going to storm Cinderella's Castle be- fore this is over." Oh, buddy, I hate to tell ya: if they're storming anything, it's the Hall of Presi- dents. North Korea reported its first coronavirus outbreak today and ordered all cities and counties to enter lockdown, or, as they call it, "business as usual!" According to a new study, the top three baby names said to make a comeback this year are Joan, Mary and Margaret; which is also a full curse in a Catholic household. "Ah, Joan, Mary and Margaret! I stubbed my toe!" LATE LAUGHS BY DANA SIMPSON TV Media A 'Sterling Affair' to re- member: Given the recent suc- cess of the HBO series "Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty," sports dramas look poised to become the next big thing after true crime. Not to be outdone by their competitors, FX picked up "The Sterling Af- fairs" back in April, and it seems it has just found its leading man. Ed O'Neill — perhaps best known to sitcom fans as Jay Pritchett across all 11 seasons of ABC's "Modern Family," or as Al Bundy in Fox's "Married... With Children" some 12 years earlier — has been tapped to take on the leading role of Donald Sterling, an American attorney and the owner of the San Diego/Los An- geles Clippers from 1981 to 2014. Sterling's story was recently told as a part of ESPN's 30 for 30 podcast series, but for those who may have missed it, FX plans to lay it all out in a six-part limited series on the network (and more than likely its associated stream- ing service, Hulu). "The Sterling Affairs" will fol- low the Los Angeles Clippers' quest for an NBA championship title despite their status as one of the worst teams in the league at the time. On the decline, due largely in part to Sterling's "no- toriously racist behavior" (per Variety) and his failing personal relationships, the team was pushed towards the finish line by current Philadelphia 76ers head coach Doc Rivers. Rivers is slated to be played by Emmy- and Tony-winning actor Laurence Fishburne ("The Matrix," 1999), while the role of Sterling's wife of more than 60 years, Shelly, is to be filled by two-time Oscar nomi- nee Jacki Weaver ("Silver Lin- ings Playbook," 2012). No word yet on who will step into the role of Sterling's mistress, V. Sti- viano. FX Productions is slated to produce the series, with Nina Ja- cobsen ("American Crime Sto- ry"), Brad Simpson ("Crazy Rich Asians," 2018) and Nellie Reed ("Y: The Last Man") of Color Force signed on as executive producers alongside Ramona Shelburne, the reporter and host behind the original podcast sto- ry. Creator Gina Welch ("Feud: Bette and Joan") also serves as an executive producer in addi- tion to her writing duties. 'Cobra' in the can: After a couple of years of pandemic de- lays and filming complications, many film and TV fans have be- come accustomed to longer waits between seasons of their favorite shows. One show is put- ting expectations "in a body bag," however, and has an- nounced Season 5 in less time than it takes a baby to grow in utero. "Cobra Kai," a YouTube Pre- mium original that made the transition to Netflix after two seasons, is preparing to roll out its fifth season less than nine months after the end of its fourth. Season 5 is expected to be released Sept. 9 on the streaming platform. Fans are excited about more crane-kicking drama, and, by the looks of the teaser, there is sure to be plenty to go around. While many details about the Karate Kid franchise series' next install- ment remain under wraps, there are some plot points that have already been teased. Those who've seen the official teaser trailer will already know that it looks like the Cobra Kai won last season's All Valley Tournament before Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith, "xXx," 2002) took control of the estab- lishment with plans for expan- sion. The two-minute an- nouncement also alludes to Daniel (Ralph Macchio, "The Karate Kid," 1984) doing every- thing he can to thwart Silver's plans, while Johnny (William Zabka, "Hot Tub Time Ma- chine," 2010) travels south to Mexico with Robby (Tanner Bu- chanan, "Designated Survivor"), his estranged son, in search of Miguel (Xolo Maridueña, "Par- enthood"). While it's unclear whether filming has wrapped on the up- coming season, the next few months leading up to the release will be focused on post-produc- tion duties. Brady's big gig: Following Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarter- back Tom Brady's short-lived re- tirement earlier this year, there has been lots of continued talk as to the football star's plans for the future. While some specu- late he may never retire from the game he loves, Fox seems to have other ideas. During a recent investor call, Fox Corporation CEO Lachlan Murdoch announced that Brady would join Fox Sports as an an- nouncer following his retire- ment. The hope is that Brady's presence would fill the void left by longtime fixtures Joe Buck and Troy Aikman, who left for rival network ESPN. That said, Brady's choice to retire (or not) remains totally up to him. "[Brady] will not only call our biggest NFL games with Kevin Burkhardt," Murdoch said dur- ing the call, "but will also serve as an ambassador for us, particu- larly with respect to client and promotional initiatives." Brady, meanwhile, seemed on the fence regarding this an- nouncement and took to Twitter with an announcement of his own. Alongside the Fox announce- ment, Brady posted: "Excited, but a lot of unfinished business on the field with the @Bucca- neers #LFG." Ed O'Neill to star in "The Sterling Affairs" STARS ON SCREEN
