Practicing self-care means taking care of ourselves physically, mentally and emotionally. Self-care is keeping an awareness of what our entire body needs daily and in certain situations. Not taking care of our daily needs will lead to larger problems that will show up later in the form of illness, pain, and problems within our relationships. What's the connection between our physical health and our mental health? Each part—both physical and mental—affects the other. Chronic pain, when left untreated, can cause anxiety and depression. On the other side, untreated mental health can cause physical pain, poor sleep, and other physical issues. How would you describe the mind-body connection? The mind-body connection is the link between our thoughts and behaviors and our physical health. When we are stressed, our body releases two hormones: adrenaline and cortisol. When these are out of balance, we do not know why our brain is sending these stress signals or how to respond, and they can cause our body to feel sick and inflamed. I would describe this connection as a constant conversation your body has within itself. Pain in muscle tension, like headaches, are our body's way of telling our mind to relax or pay attention. Have you ever felt so nervous your hands start to shake or could not sleep from worry? Our emotions often affect the way we feel physically. What are some examples of self-care? Self-care is unique to each individual, and can include fun things like hobbies. Self-care is also moving your body, eating healthy foods, setting a routine for sleep, and yoga. It's listening to what your body and mind need without putting other things or people above it. What are some ways to incorporate self-care rituals and habits into our daily lives? Take one self-care step, put it in your calendar, and set a time for it. After six weeks, when it is going well, set another one. Tell your close friends or family member what you are doing and ask for support. Why is it important to address health from a holistic perspective? Our mind and body continue to change and have different needs. There are 5 aspects of health: Physical, Emotional, Social, Spiritual, and Mental. All aspects of holistic health are what helps a person truly live each day in the healthiest, happiest way. Enhanced Healthcare addresses all areas of the body, including the mind and behaviors, to help people get to their optimal health. We provide knowledge and time with each person. We have medical providers, a mental health therapist, wellness specialist, and even a small gym to help people learn to use the equipment in a stress-free environment.
