T22 WHATS UP! February 13 - 19, 2022 The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Good news: the world did not end. It was touch and go because today a "large 'potentially dan- gerous' asteroid" passed by the Earth. Man, the Oscar campaign for "Don't Look Up" is out of control. Too far! Today Senate Democrats pressed ahead with an effort to pass new voting rights protec- tions through Congress, "even though the measure appears all but dead." C'mon guys, don't give up the fight. No, do not get discouraged. In the Senate, there are a lot of things that "appear all but dead." Recently lions at a zoo in South Africa got severe COVID-19 from asymptomatic zoo han- dlers. ... These zoo infections raised concerns about the cre- ation of new variants, because after the animals catch the virus, the disease could mutate in them and re-infect humans. ... I believe they call that a "Hakuna Mutat-a." Last week, the Supreme Court struck down Biden's vaccine mandate for large businesses, and shortly thereafter Starbucks announced that it is "no longer requiring employees to get vac- cinated or submit to weekly test- ing," which is huge because they have over 9,000 U.S. coffee shops ... and employs 200,000 workers and it seems like none of them are working on your or- der even though you're pretty sure that lady who just got the cake pops came in after you. The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon I read that Neil Gorsuch is the only Supreme Court justice who won't wear a mask to protect his colleague, Sonia Sotomayor, who has diabetes. You know Gorsuch is the guy who touches every bagel before picking one. Today former New York City mayor Bill de Blasio announced that he is not running for gover- nor of New York. ... He said he wants to spend more time at home being booed by his family. Madame Tussaud's just un- veiled their new figure of Presi- dent Biden. Weirdly enough, that wax statue has a 60% ap- proval rating. The Late Late Show With James Corden In an effort to combat misinfor- mation, they [the House] are now considering holding tele- vised hearings later this spring in prime time. ... In the spirit of fairness, as counter-program- ming to the televised insurrec- tions hearings, Fox News have said that instead, they will just air a continuous loop of a bald eagle giving birth to an Ameri- can flag. Former president Trump an- nounced that he is canceling a previously planned press con- ference tomorrow, on the anni- versary of Jan. 6. He did so hours after Republican Senators told him that the press conference might not be a "good idea." Don- ald Trump is canceling an ap- pearance and listening to advice from other people — I'm wor- ried about him. Many countries are advising [their Olympic] athletes off Wi- Fi networks and use burner phones if possible. Basically, if you compete in the Olympics, it's cocaine dealer rules: three calls, put it in the microwave, bang — done. Jimmy Kimmel Live! Moderna is working on a shot that would protect us from CO- VID and the flu at the same time. They were apparently inspired by the genius who came up with the combined Taco Bell/Pizza Hut, and also those jars of pea- nut butter with jelly in them. ... But I like this. It's especially good for kids like mine, who hate getting shots, and even militant anti-vaxxers. This is great for them because they don't have to run all over town making death threats to two different pharma- cists now. In New York ... Madame Tus- saud's unveiled their new wax figures of the president and the vice-president, and you can see they did quite a job. This might be the first time a wax figure has looked more lifelike than the person it's based on. They built him back better. LATE LAUGHS BY MICHELLE ROSE TV Media A 'Justified' revival: Have you missed watching a Stetson- clad Timothy Olyphant ("Santa Clarita Diet") uphold justice week after week on TV? If so, FX has some good news for you: It's bringing back "Justified" as a limited series, and Olyphant will be reprising his role as U.S. Mar- shal Raylan Givens. Reports of a revival first sur- faced in March 2021, when Vari- ety reported that several show writers — including creator Graham Yost ("Speed," 1994) — were working on a new iteration of the drama series. FX has now officially greenlit "Justified: City Primeval," which is based on the novel "City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit" by late crime novelist Elmore Leonard. "City Primeval" is set eight years after the events of the orig- inal series, which won a Pea- body Award and netted several Emmy nominations during its six-season (2010-15) run. Givens is living in Miami now, where he's trying to balance his life as a part-time dad and a U.S. Marshal. But after a chance en- counter on a desolate Florida highway, the lawman is suddenly bound for Detroit, where he crosses path with Clement Man- sell, aka The Oklahoma Wild- man. Mansell is a violent socio- path who has (so far) managed to elude justice, thanks in part to his formidable lawyer, Carolyn Wilder, who seems to have her own reasons for placing herself between cop and criminal. No news yet on who is to fill each of those roles. In a statement, FX Entertain- ment president Eric Schrier said: "'Justified' was one of the most critically acclaimed shows of the past decade and an adaption of Elmore Leonard's work that was so colorfully brought to life by Timothy Olyphant as Raylan Givens, Graham Yost and the en- tire team of producers, writers, directors and cast. To have this group come together again with Tim as Raylan in a new and dif- ferent Elmore Leonard story is thrilling. "I want to thank our showrun- ners Dave [Andron] and Mi- chael [Dinner] and their fellow executive producers, Tim, Gra- ham, Sarah [Timberman] and Carl [Beverly], the Elmore Leon- ard estate as well as our partners at Sony Pictures Television, for making this possible." Cast in 'Mason': The Mat- thew Rhys ("The Americans") -led "Perry Mason" revival deliv- ered some strong viewer num- bers for HBO in the summer of 2020 — in fact, its ratings were so strong the cable network went ahead and ordered a sec- ond installment before the first season had even finished airing. We can expect Rhys to return in Season 2 as Mason, a low-rent private investigator who is still haunted by his war experiences and a broken marriage. Also re- turning are Juliet Rylance ("The Knick"), Chris Chalk ("When They See Us"), Diarra Kilpatrick ("The Last O.G."), Eric Lange ("Narcos") and Justin Kirk ("Weeds"). A few new faces have also joined the cast for Season 2 — including new series regular Katherine Waterston (of the "Fantastic Beasts" films), who joins the cast as Ginny Aimes, a model schoolteacher to Mason's son — and a rumored love inter- est for Mason, too. There are quite a few recur- ring players as well, including Hope Davis ("Your Honor") and Jon Chaffin ("BMF"). Sean Astin ("Stranger Things") will appear as Sunny Gryce, who is described as "a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield that is dueling super- markets in town" (per HBO), and it's worth noting that Gryce is the type of client who wants to make sure he gets his money's worth out of his legal represen- tatives. Tommy Dewey ("Pivoting") will play Brooks McCutcheon, who's eager to prove himself to his oil baron father, played by Oscar nominee Paul Raci ("Sound of Metal," 2019). Jen Tullock ("Severance") will also recur as screenwriter Anita St. Pierre, a potential love interest for Della (Rylance). The second season of HBO's "Perry Mason" is set months af- ter the Dodson trial ended, when, according to Deadline, Mason has "moved off the farm, ditched the milk truck, he's even traded his leather jacket for a pressed suit." Apple's Godzilla: Apple TV+ and Legendary Television have partnered up to unleash the full destructive powers of Godzilla and other Monster- verse creatures. A new live-action "Godzilla" show was recently handed a se- ries order, and while there is no official release date yet, fans are already speculating it will land sometime in 2023. The series is also without an official title right now, but Apple did in- clude a synopsis in its official announcement: "Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that lev- elled San Francisco and the shocking new reality that mon- sters are real, the series ex- plores one family's journey to uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to the se- cret organization known as Monarch." Apple's "Godzilla" series will be tied to Legendary's Monster- verse and its movies, and since it will be set after the events of 2019's "Godzilla vs. Kong," ex- pect a few references to the car- nage already wrought by Godzilla, Kong and Me- chagodzilla. Timothy Olyphant stars to star in reboot of "Justified" STARS ON SCREEN
