January 30 - February 5, 2022 WHATS UP! T11 Advance Pest Control 2 x 2 TAKE 5 Solution on page T23 Use the clues above and beside the grid to fill in the squares Gibson Chiro 3 x 2 BY ADAM THOMLISON TV Media Q: Is it true that Michael Keaton is playing the same character in "Out of Sight" that he is in "Jackie Brown"? A: That is, in fact, federal agent Ray Nicolette in both movies. "Out of Sight" (1998) and "Jackie Brown" (1997) were re- leased just six months apart but were made by different direc- tors (Steven Soderbergh and Quentin Tarantino, respective- ly), so it would be hard to be- lieve that they shared a charac- ter if you didn't know that they're both based on novels by the great crime writer Elmore Leonard. Indeed, a number of Leonard's novels exist within a shared uni- verse, and therefore, so do the screen adaptations — though they don't always share the same actors. Keaton's character, Nicolette, appears only briefly in "Out of Sight," as a love interest to lead character U.S. Marshal Karen Sisco, played by pop star Jenni- fer Lopez ("Hustlers," 2019). Sisco got her own short-lived TV series in 2003, and Nicolette showed up there as well, played that time by Peter Horton (of TV's "Thirtysomething"). The Sisco character, in turn, made an appearance in arguably the most successful Leonard adaption, the long-running FX series "Justified." Is your mind blown yet? If not, try to imagine that "Justified's" deadly serious U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens therefore exists in the same universe as the hy- per-violent goofballs who popu- late "Jackie Brown" — the gritty, wacky universe that sprang from Elmore Leonard's brain. Q: Did Richard Dreyfuss appear on the TV show "Fame"? I seem to recall see- ing him give an amazing per- formance. A: You've almost certainly seen Richard Dreyfuss ("Jaws," 1975) turn in an amazing perfor- mance, but it wasn't on "Fame." He never appeared on either the TV adaptation or its 1980 big- screen predecessor. It's actually hard to guess whom or what you might be thinking of — but we can always try. Most likely you aren't thinking of Dreyfuss at all. "Fame" was a very '80s phenomenon, but Dreyfuss was pretty well totally absent from TV at that time. He was a certified superstar by then and didn't have much time for the small screen. He did start doing more tele- vision in the 2000s, when it wasn't seen as such a step down from cinema, but it would be hard to mix up any of those re- cent shows with an '80s time- piece like "Fame." As for big-name stars who guested on "Fame," it's possible you're thinking of Russ Tamb- lyn ("West Side Story," 1961), who appeared as a choreogra- pher in three episodes late in the show's six-season run, in- cluding an appearance in the season finale. He and Dreyfuss share a bearded-everyman quality, and though Tamblyn is 13 years old- er, they have both looked about 45 years old for most of their ca- reers. Otherwise, it's a bit hard to say which actor you might be thinking of. Despite its high profile, "Fame" didn't actually feature a lot of notable guest stars, at least not when they were already fa- mous (though, like a lot of shows, it did boast pre-stardom appearances from a lot of future celebrities).
