Fall 2021 HEADCOUNT The chapter is thriving in every way—brotherhood, activities, social, and financial. This fall, we had 82 men living in the house with another 80 living off campus in dorms or apartments. Post-renovation, 84 is our maximum comfortable live-in headcount; thus, the chapter is on plan. Total membership is over 160 men, with that tally expected to grow to over 175 men in spring 2022. Our True Gentleman's attitude coupled with our reputation and size make ΣAE the place to be for Purdue men. Meeting headcount targets provides both brotherhood and financial benefits. The $5,800 fee per semester as well as the all-inclusive house bill competes with all housing options and allows ΣAE to service the renovation debt in addition to funding reserves necessary to maintain a large building and property. RECRUITMENT COVID-19 restrictions, again, forced changes to recruitment, but ΣAE adapted and flourished. During the summer, Recruitment Chairmen Alex Geise '24 and Zach Sweeney '24 scheduled Zoom-based recruitment sessions to ensure that potential new members (PNMs) could meet brothers and learn about ΣAE. A direct-mail marketing campaign for all incoming freshmen raised our profile in addition to our recruitment video you can see at saepurdue.com. Alex and Zach had 14 PNMs committed to ΣAE before "official" Interfraternity Council (IFC) recruitment began. With 42 new initiates in early September, ΣAE led all IFC chapters. Spring recruitment starts in late January 2022; the chapter expects to recruit another 25 new brothers to meet the annual new member target of over 60 new additions. ΣAE embraces recruitment and is the envy of all. #METOO MOVEMENT AT PURDUE Many campuses are experiencing #MeToo protests, and Purdue is as well. There were two documented rapes at other fraternity houses. Sexual assault is a big and real issue, and college women are rightfully protesting abhorrent behavior. Fraternities who tolerate such actions, such as date-rape drugs, do themselves and the reputation of Greek life overall no favors. ΣAE Purdue has expelled a member, rescinded bids, and put a member on probation for violating True Gentleman standards. In October, IFC conducted sexual assault sessions that were mandatory for all IFC members. COMPOSITE PROJECT We're still collecting personal copies of composites for our project to reproduce and replace missing copies with enlarged versions. We'd like to have copies in all the public areas and hallways to document ΣAE's long history at Purdue. We're missing 1971, 1975 to 1978, 1980 to 1991, and 1993 to 2009. If you can help, please send a note to wayne.mcintyre@ yahoo.com. All composites will be digitally copied and archived, so they will accessible in the future to make a replacement or enlargement. RENOVATIONS Last March, the retaining wall facing Quincy Street collapsed. A local civil engineering firm stated that the wall design was flawed and made for a situation where hydrostatic pressure accumulated and destroyed the wall. Initial studies indicate that the rebuild will cost approximately $60,000. Additionally, two days before fall classes began, a leased Culligan water softener went into continuous cycle mode and flooded what's now called the Tube Room (also known as the lounge back in the day). ServPro did a professional remediation cleanup, and Culligan's insurance carrier is cooperating with an effort that will total another $50,000 with minimal financial impact on ΣAE. During the summer, vandals twice tipped over one of the two lions facing the parking lot. There was no serious damage, and the lions are now securely mounted. Design studies and cost estimates are underway for building the second parking lot and renovating/replacing the porch facing the Wabash River. These renderings above show current thinking. The House Corporation is assessing financing options for these important projects. PLEDGES AND DONATIONS Alumni have been both generous and timely in pledging and meeting their pledges. Final plans for a commemorative plaque are nearly complete, so make sure that you've fulfilled your pledge to get proper recognition. As always, Purdue ΣAE appreciates your loyalty!
