Before you dig, plan. Figure out where you are going to plant what, before you do anything, because it will save time, money and effort. Planting the right plant or tree in a location where it gets the right ex- posure and organizing companion planting helps to design irrigation, if you choose to install it, and as- sures success. It helps to choose the right companion plants so they will get enough sun or enough shade which factors into the success of the garden where everything is grow- ing well and fl ourishing. All of this planning is predicated on the fact that you can get what you want at the nursery or box store where you shop for plants. Speaking from ex- perience, it doesn't always work out that way. You can't always fi nd the plant or tree you want. You can then re-think your plan, or do what Den- nis did which was go on a mission to fi nd exactly what he wanted. Dennis' alternatives were driving to Phoenix to their nurseries, mail-or- dering plants that were bare root, or ordering plants by phone and hav- ing them delivered from Phoenix. That last remedy only works if you are ordering a lot of plants. Dennis worked part-time so he made the time to do this. He also had a truck that had a cab so he could transport his plants without risk of wind dam- age. There is always a third option. In my case it was to learn enough about all the different low-water use plants and trees so I could make adjustments to my so-called plan depending on what was available. I did not and do not have time to hunt down what I cannot fi nd easily. Once upon a time there was a garden nursery in Parker whose owner, for one brief season came to Quartzsite for the winter. He sold out of his plants often while he was here. Since neither of those options exist now, travel to Lake Havasu, Yuma, Wickenburg, or Phoenix, ordering on line or delivery are the options available or being fl exible with what you want. When I fi rst started visiting box stores and garden nurseries, I learned to take a plant guide with me. The one I use is, "Landscape Plants for the Arizona Desert" pub- lished by the Arizona Department of Water Resources. It is in maga- zine format with lots of pictures and is also available on line. Another good choice is a soft-cover book I have referred to often, "The Arizona Gardener's Guide" by Mary Irish. Both of these plant guides are color illustrated. Both are available at the Quartzsite library. Here is yet another option: seeds. Believe it or not, you can buy bou- gainvillea seeds from Amazon. There are countless seed companies that can supply and ship seeds from just about anywhere. You don't need to drive, or dig giant holes or risk 20.00 to 50.00 dollars or more on a single plant. Most plants purchased from reputable growers or box stores like Lowe's or Home Depot guarantee their plants for one year. You have to keep the dead plant and the pot it came in as well as the re- ceipt in order to get a refund. So, who does that? Dennis did. It was another of his missions. The necessary requirement of seeds is patience because they need time. With seeds there are no instant re- sults. There is also no transplant shock which sets back a plant's growth. Gardening, like many things in life where a plan is effective, can require a plan B, fl exibility, the abil- ity to punt or get creative because, to quote the publisher of this paper, Rain, "Shift happens!" Quartzsite Trivia Ten years ago on Saturday, December 17, 2011, Quartzsite's Hi Jolly Monument was placed on National Register of Historic places. Over one hundred people came out to the Hi Jolly Cemetery then to take part in a special ceremony. The Quartzsite Historical Society and the Hi Jolly Cem- etery Board had worked really hard to have the Hi Jolly Monument des- ignated as a Historical Place on the National Registry of Historic Places for a long time. Hadji Ali, better known as "Hi Jolly", was born in Izmir, Turkey to a Christian Syrian father and Greek mother sometime in 1828. Hi Jolly, the legendary Camel Driver retired in Quartzsite, where he died on or about December 16, 1902. Hi Jolly is honored in the Quartzsite cemetery, off N. Kofa Ave.
