I know I speak for many when I say that I have fond memories of meeting Dave for coffee or lunch on the corner, chatting in Natty Beau, or at his plot at the Foxfield races. He was genuine at all times, and was always available to discuss issues, concerns, or upcoming decisions to be made. I was always inspired by Dave's thoughtful and principle-driven approach, which was ever- present and on display over his last few weeks guiding the Psi Chapter. He will be missed in his formal role." —Owen Sperling '16 "My experience working with Dave was primarily from 2015-17. The Chapter Advisor role was always a tricky one for anyone to undertake due to the unpredictable nature and timing of problems that could arise. Whether it was helping calm tensions with University administrators or disgruntled Charlottesville residents, or handling permitting, noise, or living situations, Dave was consistently quick to respond and always with an appropriately light touch. Dave never interfered or got involved when he didn't have to—and when we did need to lean on him, he always delivered. Dave also helped us handle Sigma Chi International relations. His involvement in the Charlottesville community as well as his deep alumni relations came in handy not just with issues, but also with helping coordinate positive things such as Homecomings or house commemorations. Dave was a great ally to the Brothers at 608, even through tough times, and his calming, respected presence will be thoroughly missed in the Chapter advisor role." —Conor Kelly '17 "Dave was always a tremendous resource and, more importantly, mentor for the active Brotherhood. Whether it was during formal settings, such as initiation and checks-ins, or informal settings like a dinner and his annual Foxfield plot, Dave served as a strong leader and role model. Despite the change, we all look forward to continuing and building on our relationship with Dave." —Rob Raiola '18 "As our Chapter Advisor, Dave Holmes was a steady hand, a boundless source of advice, and a tireless advocate who always had the best interests of the Psi Chapter and its members at heart. He helped each new class of Chapter leadership understand their responsibilities to the Brotherhood and navigate through the challenges that they inevitably faced along the way. I will always be thankful that I had Dave Holmes as a mentor, sounding board, and friend during my time as an active.. . and I hope he can find a less stressful extracurricular activity in the near future!" —Sean Fitzgerald '19 "Dave was truly a great influence on me while I was an active and in my role as Consul. He helped me develop a solid relationship with Psi alumni and navigate situations with a broader perspective. He performed his role as Chapter Advisor with humility and treated all the actives with respect. Dave really stepped up and supported me in coordinating large Dave'S Seven ConSulS Chapter Leaders Reflect on the Legacy of Dave Holmes '84 Singular Enthusiasm By Terry Rainey '77 "Snave" had a singular enthusiasm about staying in touch— When he thought about someone, he didn't put it off, he picked up the phone and called— Laughing easily, quickly, fully, finding common ground. With his restless intelligence and empathetic nature, He was innately interested in how you got where you were and, wherever you were going, He trusted you were headed in the right direction. Jim remembered every single person's story, Took each of us to heart— part of his abiding belief in respect, inclusiveness, and loyalty— He strengthened bonds of brotherhood with his reverence for friendship. Along the tide of years, we grew— In ways we couldn't imagine— Blessed by what we shared with him and what we share, today and into the future, In the light of his singular enthusiasm. 10/2021 events at the House that connected the actives with alumni, including alumni interviews for the initiation ceremony, fundraising events, and class reunions over the summer. He always helped actives see the long- term relationships we can establish with our Psi Brothers." —Mattias Pinto '20 "Dave was an incredibly active and invested leader of the Psi Chapter. He was committed to ensuring the actives made the most of their undergraduate experience. Dave was the first person the actives would seek out for help in any situation, and he was always there to respond. He is a fundamental part of why the Brotherhood of Psi Chapter is as strong as it is today." —Ryan Franks '21 "I had the pleasure of working with Dave closely over the past two semesters. I am extremely grateful for the guidance he gave over what was a very difficult time for the Chapter, the university, and the overall community. On behalf of the actives, I would like to thank Dave for being our Chapter advisor." —Tim Sever '22
