The Constantine Sig 2 T he Psi Chapter of Sigma Chi House Corporation held its annual meeting on September 26. Among other things, we bade farewell to four long-serving directors: Judge Jim Moore '68 (former House Corporation president), Steve Herbert '68 (former chairman of both the Building Committee and the capital campaign), Dick Dyas '67, and Bruce Duerson '68. Collectively, these four had almost half a century of service to Psi Chapter. Their devotion to the Chapter is immeasurable, and the results of their dedication are amazing. During their watch, more than $2 million was raised, a new wing was added to 608, and a complete renovation was accomplished. They were relentless in their pursuit and achievement of what many considered an overly ambitious goal. I am grateful to have served with them, to have learned from them, and to be able to call them friends and Brothers. Shortly after this, more than 60 of us gathered at 608 on Saturday, October 6, immediately after UVA pummeled Duke. It was an evening of recognition and remembrance. Steve Herbert formally dedicated the newly renovated House and recognized the closure of the capital campaign, thanking all who contributed to the effort. He summarized what was a long, arduous process, recognized all those involved in the renovation, and unveiled an impressive plaque denoting all those who contributed more than $2,500 to the campaign. Bruce Duerson and I then had the pleasure of presenting Steve Herbert with the Significant Sig award. Sigma Chi International selected Steve for this award, which is presented to alumni whose exemplary achievements in their fields of endeavor have brought great honor and prestige to the name of Sigma Chi. Since his graduation in 1968, Steve has served his nation and community with courage, grace, and compassion. As a Navy lieutenant, he earned the Navy Cross in Vietnam; he served as city manager for Suffolk and Hopewell, Virginia, and was the deputy city manager of Virginia Beach; he was appointed by the Virginia Beach City Council in 2014 to be a member of the Military Economic Development Advisory Committee; he was appointed by Governor McAuliffe in 2015 to be a member of the Joint Leadership Council of Veterans Service Organization; and he has served as the vice chairman of the board for the Virginia Beach Neptune Festival. Currently, Steve is serving as vice president for Lynnhaven River Now, a leading environmental organization in Virginia Beach; he volunteers with his church, St Andrew's Episcopal Church in Norfolk; and he is a devoted family man, friend, and Brother. Congrats, Steve, on this well-deserved recognition! We then dedicated the side terrace adjoining the Chapter Room to Jim Evans '77, who passed away in May 2015. Jim's wife, Tamara, sister, Rebecca, and brother-in-law, Bill, were in attendance. George Maughan '74 offered some wonderful words highlighting Jim's exuberance for all things Sigma Chi. Jim Chappell '76 then read a poem written by Terry Rainey '77, one of Jim's best friends (see poem on page 3). Lastly, Steve Rublee '76 played his guitar, singing The Eagles' "Peaceful, Easy Feeling." It was a fitting ceremony for a wonderful man who is deeply missed. More recently, Dave Holmes '84 stepped down as our Chapter advisor. He served as counselor, mentor, and the voice of reason for seven consuls. He was always there for the actives, helping them work through the construction and renovation turmoil; adjust appropriately to increasing oversight and scrutiny by the UVA Dean of Students Office; deal with UVA COVID procedures and sanctions; diplomatically handle difficulties with neighbors and other fraternities; and coordinate with Sigma Chi International. In every instance, Dave provided the Chapter with reasoned and analytical, yet compassionate, advice. Dave, on behalf of the hundreds of actives you served during your tenure, and all the Alumni who benefited from your efforts, thank you. You have made a difference. We are looking for a Psi to serve as Chapter advisor. If you are interested or have questions, please reach out to me at jgjmallon@comcast.net or our regional Sigma Chi Grand Praetor, Mark Paniccia, at mark.paniccia@sigmachi.org. In Hoc, Jim Mallon '81 President Psi of Sigma Chi House Corporation HOUSE CORPORATION UPDATE Honoring and Remembering Valued Brothers Psi Chapter had a great turnout for Homecomings Weekend! Steve Herbert '68 and Jim Mallon '81 cut the ribbon to celebrate our renovated Chapter House. Our donor plaque for the Honoring Our Past, Building Our Future campaign—finished at last! Bruce Duerson '68 presents Steve Herbert '68 with his Significant Sig award. This plaque, memorializing Jim Evans '77, hangs in the side terrace adjoining the Chapter Room.
