David Jervis '77 on the Importance of Alumni Support A fter David Jervis '77 joined Phi Gamma Delta at Colorado State University, he learned that everyone in the chapter was either a hippie or a cowboy. "I was neither and wanted something better." During spring break of 1973, he drove to Lawrence and stayed at the Pi Deuteron Chapter House for a few days. He was impressed by the men there and the whole Greek system at KU, so he became a Jayhawk and moved into the house that fall. From there, David enjoyed spending his undergraduate years with his FIJI Brothers and meeting Graduate Brothers at the annual Pig Dinner. He met alumni like Paul Coker '51, Yogi Williams '45, and Shelby Smith '52 (the former Lieutenant Governor of Kansas, who sadly passed away from COVID-19 last November). When David thinks of Phi Gam's impact on his life, he recalls one of the Fraternity's pillars: "Phi Gamma Delta is not for college days alone." "When you think about it, a fraternity is kind of like a small business," he said. "Depending on what one wants to get out of it, the fraternity experience is very helpful in learning life skills. Many of us, from the members of the cabinet down to the House Manager and Recruitment, Athletic, and Scholarship Chairmen had duties, and our overall performance depended on how well those members did their jobs." Speaking of businesses, David played a major role in the Eight Bucks A Month Club that has funded various house expenses over the years. When David joined, the program was run solely by J.V. VanAllen '76; it began as the "Two Bucks A Month Club" and gradually increased with inflation. "He asked if I would help him, and we spent many nights writing the letter and stuffing and licking approximately 1,300 envelopes," David recalls. "Somehow I ended up with the job for the next 22 years." "There is a lot of wear and tear on any home, let alone one with 70-80 young men living under one roof," he added. "A fraternity is not like a dorm or scholarship hall where the university or taxpayers pay for the upkeep. We have to do it on our own; that's why it is so important that we, as Graduate Brothers, financially support Pi Deuteron." David lives in Eastborough, Kansas, with his wife of 25 years, Sarah Jones. His 93-year-old mother lives nearby and is in good health. His sister (and generous kidney donor 16 years ago), Liz, lives in Herndon, Virginia, and works for a division of the State Department. To date, David still considers that first visit to Pi Deuteron one of his best decisions. "I was fortunate to have spent such a short time of my life with so many wonderful guys. For me, Phi Gamma Delta definitely wasn't for college days alone." You can reach David at aberdeen34@aol.com. Keeping Our Home Intact Mathew Brown* Overland Park, Kan. Kam Butler Denver, Colo.
