November 14 - 20, 2021 WHATS UP! T11 Advance Pest Control 2 x 2 TAKE 5 Solution on page T23 Use the clues above and beside the grid to fill in the squares Gibson Chiro 3 x 2 BY ADAM THOMLISON TV Media Q: One of the main charac- ters in "Friends" was named Rachel Green. In "ER," there is also a character named Ra- chel Greene. Is there any con- nection? A: Yet another Rachel Green, this one a New York comedian, wrote the following for Britain's Metro newspaper: "Rachel Green is a pretty common name for a Jewish girl from the Tri- State area (New York, New Jer- sey, Connecticut). I even went to camp with a Rachael Greene (who obviously spells it wrong)." Green's article discusses something that she's been ad- dressing for years: people always point out that she has the same name as Jennifer Aniston's char- acter on "Friends." She could just as easily be speaking for the "ER" character, another lesser-known Rachel Greene (though, as you point out, she also spells it differently), because there is, in fact, no con- nection that led to them having the same name. However com- mon the name is, though, there are a few surprising coincidenc- es in there. The biggest one is that they were "born" (in TV terms) just three days apart, and on the same network. "ER's" Rachel Greene (Yvonne Zima, "The Young and the Restless") appeared in the show's pilot, which aired Sept. 19, 1994, on NBC. She was a side character, daughter of central character Dr. Mark Greene (An- thony Edwards, "Top Gun," 1986). "Friends'" Rachel Green was, of course, a central character who appeared in that show's pi- lot, which aired on the same net- work three days later, Sept. 22, 1994. (For the record, comedian Rachel Green was born in 1979, so she beat both of them to the name.) The two shows' fates were also linked by their success ("Friends" ran until 2004, "ER" until 2009), and as with so many shows that shared a network in the '90s, they had a crossover — or almost did. George Clooney and Noah Wylie, who played Dr. Doug Ross and Dr. John Carter, respec- tively, on "ER," appeared togeth- er as doctors in an episode of "Friends." Their characters' names were different, however, and the hospital they were at was in New York, not in Chicago like in "ER." Q: I've been watching re- runs of "The Lucy Show," but I can't find the episode where Elizabeth Taylor and Rich- ard Burton guest-starred. Why has it disappeared? A: It's an easy mistake to make: Hollywood power couple Elizabeth Taylor ("Cleopatra," 1963) and Richard Burton ("1984," 1984) appeared on "Here's Lucy," not "The Lucy Show." "Here's Lucy" was the third prime-time sitcom featuring comedy great Lucille Ball — "The Lucy Show" was the sec- ond — but they both sort of blend together as the work she did after "I Love Lucy." The episode you're looking for is "Lucy Meets the Burtons," the first installment of "Here's Lucy's" third season. In it, Lucy finds Taylor's famous diamond ring (featuring the 68-carat Tay- lor-Burton Diamond) and it, of course, gets stuck on her finger. Trademark Lucille Ball-style hi- jinks ensue. In real life, Taylor and Burton had bought the diamond in 1969, just a year before the episode aired, and so it was a ripped- from-the-headlines story that isn't often seen from a sitcom.
