T8 WHATS UP! November 14 - 20, 2021 BY RAYE SMITH TV Media WHAT'S NEW ON PRIME "The Wheel of Time" (2021) - Season 1 Get lost in the magic of the epic fantasy series "The Wheel of Time," premiering its first three episodes on Prime on Friday, Nov. 19, with episodes airing weekly thereafter. Based on the New York Times bestselling high-fantasy series of the same name by Robert Jordan (and lat- er, Brandon Sanderson), "The Wheel of Time" is set in a world in which the cyclical nature of time means events take place in both the distant past and future. While magic exists, only some are able to access it. Moiraine (Rosamund Pike, "Pride & Prej- udice," 2005) is one of them, and circumstances take her on a dan- gerous journey throughout her world with five young people. Believing that one of them is the Dragon Reborn, a figure prophe- sied to either doom or save hu- manity, Moiraine travels with the group to find it once and for all. Season 1 of the series is based on the first of 15 books, and with Season 2 already greenlit to go ahead, fans of the series can ex- pect to settle in for a true adven- ture. From showrunner and ex- ecutive producer Rafe Judkins ("Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D."), the se- ries is directed by Uta Briese- witz ("Westworld"), Wayne Yip ("Utopia"), Salli Richardson- Whitfield ("The Gilded Age") and Sanaa Hamri ("Empire"). Jo- sha Stradowski ("Just Friends," 2018), Marcus Rutherford ("County Lines," 2019), Zoë Rob- ins ("Power Rangers Ninja Steel"), Sophie Okonedo ("Hotel Rwanda," 2004), Barney Harris ("Brighton Beach," 2020) and Madeleine Madden ("Mystery Road") also star in the series. WHAT'S NEW ON HULU "Hit Monkey" - Season 1 Jump on board for the wild new adult animated series "Hit Mon- key," premiering Wednesday, Nov. 17, on Hulu. The latest addi- tion to the Marvel Cinematic Universe's lineup strays from the super-flicks that audiences have become so accustomed to and has shifted focus to action- packed vigilante justice rather than saving the world. Based on the Marvel comic book charac- ter of the same name, the series voice stars Fred Tatasciore ("He- Man and the Masters of the Uni- verse") as Hit-Monkey, a unique Japanese snow monkey on a mission of vengeance. With the ghost of former American assas- sin Bryce (Jason Sudeikis, "Ted Lasso") mentoring him along the way, Hit-Monkey (and his bag of guns) takes Tokyo's crime underworld by murderous storm. Created by Josh Gordon and Will Speck, the duo respon- sible for comedy hits including "Blades of Glory" (2007), "The Switch" (2010) and "Office Christmas Party" (2016), this off- beat super-assassin series brings comic fans something new. Oliv- ia Munn ("X-Men: Apocalypse," 2016), George Takei ("Star Trek: The Original Series"), Ally Maki ("Wrecked") and Nobi Nakani- shi ("The Leviathan Chroni- cles") also voice star. "The Great" - Season 2 The highly anticipated second season of "The Great" is finally here, making its debut on Friday, Nov. 19, on Hulu. Elle Fanning ("Maleficent," 2014) is 18th-cen- tury Russian Monarch Cathe- rine the Great in this semi-his- torical comedy drama. Explor- ing Catherine's rise from rural outsider to Russia's longest- reigning female ruler, this satiri- cal series depicts Catherine as a young woman, during her mar- riage to Emperor Peter III (Nich- olas Hoult, "Mad Max: Fury Road," 2015) and throughout the beginning of her rise to power. As she battles against her tyrani- cal buffoon of a husband, the court and her own mother (Gil- lian Anderson, "The X-Files"), she tries to liberate a country that doesn't want to be liberated — all while pregnant with the empire's future heir. Now, in Season 2, Catherine begins to re- alize just how much it will cost her to rule the country. Featur- ing 10 new episodes, the series's second season sees the return of regulars Phoebe Fox ("Eye in the Sky," 2015), Sacha Dhawan ("Iron Fist"), Adam Godley ("Breaking Bad"), Gwilym Lee ("Bohemian Rhapsody," 2018), Charity Wakefield ("Wolf Hall"), Belinda Bromilow ("Doc- tor Doctor") and Douglas Hodge ("Lost in Space"). WHAT'S NEW ON NETFLIX "Cowboy Bebop" - Season 1 Anime's favorite space cowboys get a makeover in the brand- new series "Cowboy Bebop," premiering Friday, Nov. 19, on Netflix. A live-action adapta- tion of the Japanese anime se- ries of the same name, the se- ries brings a new feel to the be- loved classic. Spike Spiegel (John Cho, "Star Trek," 2009), Jet Black (Mustafa Shakir, "The Deuce") and Faye Valentine (Daniella Pineda, "The Origi- nals") are a ragtag group of bounty hunters who travel the galaxy chasing down its most dangerous criminals. Any and all missions are fair game no matter how dangerous — for the right price. Directed by Alex Garcia Lopez ("The Witcher") and Michael Katle- man ("Life on Mars"), the series was developed for Netflix by André Nemec ("Teenage Mu- tant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows," 2016). Elena Satine ("The Gifted"), Alex Hassell ("Cold Mountain," 2003), Bless- ing Mokgohloa ("Pulse"), Lucy Currey ("Black Hands") and newcomer Molly Moriarty also star in the series. "Tick, Tick ... BOOM!" (2021) Take your seats and set your phones to silent for the new mu- sical experience "Tick, Tick ... Boom!" premiering Friday, Nov. 19, on Netflix. A film adaptation of "Rent" composer and play- wright Jonathan Larsen's semi- autobiographical musical of the same name, this film stars An- drew Garfield ("Hacksaw Ridge," 2016) as Jon, a promising young composer edging closer to his 30th birthday. Feeling like time is running out for him to make something great, Jon navi- gates love, friendship, life in New York City and his own quarter-life crisis while pushing himself to write the next great American musical. Featuring a screenplay by Steven Levenson ("Dear Evan Hansen," 2021), the musical is brought to the screen by director Lin-Manuel Miran- da, the mind behind Broadway's smash-hit musical "Hamilton." Starring alongside Garfield in the musical are Vanessa Hud- gens ("Journey 2: The Mysteri- ous Island," 2012), Bradley Whit- ford ("The West Wing"), Rich- ard Kind ("Argo," 2012), Alexan- dra Shipp ("X-Men: Apoca- lypse," 2016), Judith Light ("Who's the Boss?"), M.J.
