The top prize is $30,000 and is open to all students in grades 9-12, who are enrolled in a pub- lic, private or parochial school, or home study program in the United States. This year’s theme is ‘Does My Genera- tion Have a Role in America’s Future?’ Created in 1947, the Voice of Democracy (VOD) scholarship program is an audio- essay contest for high school students in grades 9-12 that annually provides more than $3 million in scholarships. The first-place winner, who competes with all the first-place VFW Department winners, receives a $30,000 scholarship that is paid directly to the recipient’s American university, college or voca- tional/technical school. Besides competing for the top schol- arship prize, as well as other national scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $16,000, each Department’s first-place winner receives an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., March 5-9, 2011, sponsored by Target. The National Association of Secondary School Principals has placed this pro- gram on the NASSP National Advisory List of Contests and Activities for 2009- 2010. The Voice of Democracy program is designed to foster patriotism by al- lowing students the opportunity to voice their opinion in a three to five minute essay based on an annual theme. Aug. 5 Quartzsite ART GUILD NEWS We had 9 members attend our July 1st meeting. We had a mini art show with 11 paintings to critique. They were very beautiful paintings. We discussed how we can make some outdoor paint- ings for the up-coming ARIZONA CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION, which is from Feb. 14, 2011 to Feb. 14, 2012. Mary Huntley has some good ideas and is going to research it further. Remember to go see the paintings of Dinise Ross at Horizon Community Bank. Her paintings will be on display through Aug 15. For the meeting on July 14th, we had 7 members attend. Many brought art- work to be critiqued. Once again we were awed by how talented our mem- bers are. We didn’t feel like painting since it was such a hot day. So we en- joyed hearing jokes and desert stories about roadrunners, snakes and weath- er stories. The next meeting is on Thursday, Aug. 5 at 6:30 pm at the Senior Center. Tina Moore will be teaching us a lesson in perspective drawing. So bring drawing paper along with pens or pencils and a ruler. Hope to see you there. For more information, contact Carol Brainerd at 928-927-7344. P 7 Coffee with Cops Wed.
