P 4 QUARTZSITE ROCKS!! This is my first summer in Quartz- site and I am thrilled to be enjoying the doves, bunnies, dry heat, and cool friends! Thanks to Silly Al’s Pizza we’ve got Karaoke with Susie Q on Friday and Saturday nights where families gather to sing their favorite songs while enjoy- ing the air-conditioned restaurant and piping hot pizza. Old-timers tell me about the days when music jams and McD’s went together like toast and jam. These weeks preceding the return of our win- ter guests is a perfect time to rekindle activities such as music jams at McD’s that are so greatly appreciated by our loyal desert-dwellers and enthusiastic winter visitors. Arizona’s Centennial is coming up soon and I can’t think of a better time than NOW to take pride in who we are and what we have to share. Singers, musicians, and dancers of all ages: let us learn the lyrics to the New Christy Minstrels’ song “SET YOUR SITES ON QUARTZSITE” and get that welcome mat ready for our long-time friends and all the newcomers too because, as we all know, Quartzsite Rocks!!! Very, very good and welcome to the club of harassed citizens of Quartzsite. I wish you were not a mem- ber, because it isn’t any fun. It is so shameful that Quartzsite started getting this harassment from the previous editors of Publications, from the then and (“happy to say gone”) previous Town Manager, and so sad to see that it is continuing with this small group of present citizens. I sincerely hope that the really con- cerned citizens of Quartzsite, citizens who love the Town will start asking questions and eventually stop “those” who are causing all of this unnecessary harassment of the citizens, public offi- cials, organizations and businesses that are trying to help and clean up the mess left from the previous regime. Some of these people will be happy to hear that I have started moving to Lake Havasu City, AZ but, I am still a registered voter and have a place in Quartzsite. So I write this with a heavy heart for all of the sorrow and un- founded statements that some people have said and for all of the dissension that they have caused in a Town that is really and truly a wonderful place, if given a chance to heal. My best to you and the wonderful job you have done to bring about the begin- ning of a “real” newspaper to this beau- tiful community. I sincerely hope you will be able to weather all that you will have to go through as this community weathers these unnecessary growing pains caused by so few. My best to you and the community as a whole, Angelina M. Masales PEACE AND SERENITY IN QUARTZSITE I just wanted to give one big “hug” and commendations to our own Quartzsite Police Department! I have been read- ing the Arrest Report Section of “The Parker Pioneer” every week. Have you noticed in the weekly reports there are anywhere from 20-30 or so crimes listed for La Paz County? What is most important is that there are only 2-3 (two to three) arrests made within Quartzsite’s Town limits. I have noticed this every week on these Arrest Reports. Now, that is something to brag about. We have a dedicated Police Force tak- ing great care of us here in Quartzsite. They are ever watchful on any drug- related issues here and cleaned up this town. If there are domestic (abuse) issues and people are out-of-line, our police are there. I have often heard of someone needing aid in some manner and our police have always been there immediately. It is so refreshing to know that there are so many bright things about Quartzsite going on like the new build- ing phases and beautification projects going on. We should also add how well the Quartzsite Police maintain the Peace and Serenity of Quartzsite for us to enjoy now in the summer and for all of our ‘snowbirds’, vendors and visitors throughout the year. Thank you Quartzsite Police Department for 14,000 SQ. FT. Violet Kiss Quartzsite Resident CREDIT/DEBIT CARD SKIMMING Attorney General Terry Goddard today warned consumers about credit and debit card “skimming” which has be- come increasingly prevalent in Arizona in recent months. Skimming involves the use of an inconspicuous electronic device that thieves can install on gas pumps or bank ATMs. Essentially, these small devices record your credit or debit card number off the magnetic strip on the card as you pay for your gas. Thieves then use the stolen card numbers to make fraudulent purchases. “Skimming is simply theft by another name,” Goddard said. “I urge consum- ers who are victims of skimming to re- port it immediately to law enforcement and their bank, but also to the Attorney General’s Office.” Some skimmers have also begun to utilize miniature remote cameras to capture the PIN of card users as they pay at the pump. Other skimmers have acquired wireless technology to intercept signals used to transmit card data from gas pumps to their central computer networks. Scottsdale Police this week issued an alert which advised bank customers to be on the lookout for skimmers at bank ATMs. After skimming devices were found on machines at two Scottsdale banks. This is not an isolated matter. One bank in Arizona told the Attorney General’s Office that many of its branches state- wide have customers who have reported skimming. Attorney General Goddard is offering the following tips to help consumers avoid becoming the next victim of a skimmer: • Go inside the store to process transac- tions and remain inside to sign all credit card receipts. Keep your receipts in a secure location or shred them to protect your identity. • Arizona Federal Credit Union sug- gests that you can protect your PIN by selecting “credit” at a gas pump. When using a credit card, your liability from a stolen card is limited to $50. • If you do suspect skimming, call law enforcement immediately. You should also alert the gas station attendant. Do not rely on the attendant to call the po- lice, as there have been instances in the past of skimming being perpetrated by the employees of a service station.  SEE LETTERS PAGE 5 Property! What a
