4, 2010 PARKER- In an extraordinary meeting on Monday, July 19, 2010, the La Paz County Board of Supervisors voted to hire a Chris Thomas of Squires & Sanders to evaluate restructuring and other financial options as a result of the Yakima judgment. Yakima won the appeal lawsuit against the county of $9.2 million, plus interest, which now reaches upwards of $12 million. Many Quartzsite residents were in attendance, including Mayor Ed Fos- ter, Town Manager Alex Taft, Quartz- site Police Chief Jeff Gilbert, Council Members Joe Winslow, Patricia An- derson, and Barbara Cowell. For an explanation of Chapter 9 form baum, of Nussbaum & Gillis of Scotts- dale, the three supervisors heard from the public. Quartzsite Council member Winslow and Anderson spoke of their disproval of bringing bio-solids (hu- man waste) through Quartzsite into the county landfill. Chief Gilbert shared his concerns of bankruptcy from La Paz County Manager, Dan Field, watch the video online at http://bit.ly/an5LR6 After voting to hire Randy Nuss- about the supervisors’ earlier vote not providing benefit packages for new full time employees (hiring full time temporary positions) within the Jail District. Gilbert explained many Quartzsite citizens have concerns that trucks carrying bio-solids may be go- ing through Quartzsite, again, going to the landfill. He said, “We have our mayor here today, and hopefully he’ll get up and say a few words in regards to the town as well.” .DM. Editorial con’t from pg. 2 La Paz County explores options To view Quartzsite Police Chief Gil- bert’s comments to La Paz County Supervisors see the video online at http://bit.ly/9aGPxP Mayor Foster did not speak and left the building before he could be inter- viewed. Starr BearCat of Quartzsite also spoke about her concerns for bringing “bio-solids into our back- yard”. BearCat also suggested, “if Ya- kima wants the golf course, give it to them.” However, the supervisors did approve putting to bid for Grass Seeds for Emerald Canyon Golf Course. After public comments, the supervi- At the La Paz County Board of Supervisors meeting on July 19th, Mayor Ed Foster did not stand up for our town. Is this for the common good of the community? Quartzsite Town Council meeting agenda packages have been regularly posted online. Up until the last week in May, the same week the new mayor was sworn in, only the agendas have been posted. Why would this be allowed to continue for two months? Quartzsite was proclaimed the Rock Capital of the World over 7 months ago, but no where on the town’s website does it promote this statement of community pride. I may not be an expert on investigative reporting, but I have years of experience in marketing! We need to market Quartzsite in a way that will attract visitors to our town and our residents will love where they live. I agree with the Parker Pioneer, “Recall elections cost a lot of time and money, P 3 sors went into Executive Session seek- ing legal advice with their attorneys in order to consider its position relating to the County Landfill and restructur- ing and other financial options, as a result of the Yakima judgment. Other county business included ap- proving the tentative budget for 2010- 2011. Supervisors approved keeping many employees at same salary and asking some employees to become “Full Time Temporary” positions, rath- er than full time with benefits. Supervi- sor Drum explained, “We are in tough times, here folks. We need people to work with us during these times.” Also approved were two Memoran- dums of Understanding between the La Paz County Public Health and Edu- cation Program with the Parker School District and the Quartzsite School Dis- trict, for coordinating prevention pro- gramming to the local schools in those two districts. The Supervisors also approved “Free Golf” for residents, on Sundays only, from August 1st through August 29th, 2010. The park price will still be $10/person. Elected officials need to focus full-time on governing, which is what they were elected to do.” Paid ads have been placed in print and online, marketing three websites and doctored videos, that promote corruption, rumors, innuendos, and political agendas. It’s time the Council take a stand and authorize promoting Quartzsite and the rest of the town, our events, entertainment, and the rest of the good people of this community. I invite readers to listen to the tone of blogs on the Internet. Is the writer speaking with integrity and clarity? Does the author hide behind being anonymous or fake names, or do they own their words? Be aware of anger just for the sake of anger, and accusations based on anger or fear.
