DESERT MESSENGER IS A PROUD MEMBER OF .DM. “There’s alot more substance to Quartzsite than just politics!” On page 19 of this issue, you’ll find some The Desert Messenger, completing its 6th year and gearing up for a successful season, focuses on the local news, events and entertainment in Quartzsite and the surrounding areas. In September, 2008, I arrived back in town with hope- ful and simple plans for this paper. Do you know how to make Spirit laugh?... Make a plan! The honeymoon is over, as they say. No one could have foreseen the events that have occured since the then-Councilmember Walt Akin turned this business over to me. This paper was founded on principles of looking for good news, events and entertainment, as there was another local publication focusing on political issues. That paper is no longer in existance. According Project for Public Spaces, “Cities and regions that thrive in the 21st Century will be differentiated by their lively neighbor- hoods and business districts, cultural and recreational attractions, great sense of place, protected natural areas, and deep pride in local character, products and foods. They will achieve this through and open collaborative process with their citizens.” Quartzsite would benefit to focus on building a stronger community such as described above. Town officials have had many challenges keeping that fo- cus. Recently, Parker Pioneer featured a story on battles between the new mayor and Quartzsite officials. At the July 27th council meeting, Quartzsite Police Chief Jeff Gilbert said, “The gloves are off” regarding personal attacks to his family and his department by Mayor Ed Foster, who, just two days after taking office, filed investigations of the QPD and Town Manager, Alex Taft. Chief Gilbert read three letters from Arizona Attorney General and AZ Post stating recent investigations showed no evidence of wrongdoing. Many have accused me of not taking a stand on “the issues”. Well, maybe it’s time! After all, I take a stand for Quartzsite! I invite you to take a stand for Quartzsite also, not just the voters, but for all the people - now and for the next seven generations to come! I stand in gratitude for our community! 4, 2010 Editorial BY SHANANA “RAIN” GOLDEN-BEAR I stand for events that will promote the whole town, to bring in vendors, businesses, visitors and for our full time residents. I stand for being proud of our community. I stand against bully- ing behaviors. I stand for people work- ing together in a good way. I stand for marketing the town in a way that invites others to visit. I stand against those who want to tear apart our town. Recently our mayor joined Twitter and wrote on his BIO, “I’m the Editor of the MINESHAFT, featuring expose type journalism and dealing primarily with corruption.” Is this how a mayor builds pride in the community? I stand for celebrating the Arizona Cen- tennial, as it will bring fresh energy to this town through the yearlong events that are planned. I stand against those who want power for the sake of power. I stand up to being accused of “conspiracy to alter the outcome of the election” by Jennifer “Jade” Harris and John “Jack” Jones who author an anonymous blog full of false, misleading, and libelous state- ments about the people of this town. The owners of this blog have received a “Cease and Desist Letter” of which the three word reply was, “Go Fxxx yourself.” and no re- traction has been made on that website. I stand against those who continue to defame the Town of Quartzsite on the Internet! I stand for the volunteer organi- zations of this town who work tirelessly, giving of themselves to help others. Where do you stand? Are you willing to take a stand to support this town? Are you willing to walk through your fear of stand- ing up to those that intimidate you? See Editorial pg. 3 D M Founded by Walt Akin, October 1, 2004 Contributing Writer, Joanne Winer Quartzsite‛s FREE Community Paper Name Plate Lettering by Paul Winer PUBLISHED BY PILOT ROCK PUBLISHING CO.
