Gamble has noted that he's been pleased with the work of newcomers Kayvon Britten, a 5-9 freshman from Ohio, and Kierre Crossley, a 5-8 transfer from the University of Central Arkansas, have been putting in during preseason practices. Defensively, the Golden Lions will have to replace defensive end Xavier Mitchell and cornerback Shawn Steele after both transferred, but Gamble likes what that side of the ball accomplished in the spring. UAPB was fifth in the SWAC in total defense, spurred by Peppers. The Mississippi native led UAPB in sacks (7.5) and was second in tackles (33) while forcing a league-leading 3 fumbles. Fellow linebacker Kolby Watts, a senior, had a team-high 36 tackles while senior defensive back Jalon Thigpen's five interceptions were tied for the most in the FCS. Coincidently, all three were preseason all-conference picks. Special teams is also dominated by veterans with Ralph, an FCS All- American, returning kickoffs and punts, and Zack Piwniczka handling kicking duties. The Golden Lions open up the season Sept. 4 at home against longtime rival Lane College, which will officially kick off their campaign to win a second consecutive division title. With that comes a trip to the league championship game, and Ralph would love nothing more than to polish off his UAPB career with a SWAC trophy. "The focus is to just win," Ralph said. "Nothing special, no hard thinking, just win games each and every week. That's what we're locked in on right now." 2021 SCHEDULE DATE OPPONENT TIME Sept. 4 ...........................
