PAGE 3 FKQ FKQ T hink back to your college days, how did joining ΦΚΘ change your life? Ponder this question for a moment and send us your answer if you wish. I asked this same question to several of my (old and young) Phi Kap brothers and heard these responses: "I was completely transformed. Joining the chapter made me more outgoing, confident and greatly improved my leadership skills." – John "The aspect that I liked most was freedom. I like the ability to self- govern, to be independent, to make mistakes and learn through the experience." – Jim "At Iowa Xi I developed lifelong friends. I became a better person with the skills necessary to succeed in life." – Tom "The best part of Phi Kappa Theta was that I met tons of people from so many different backgrounds, and they became my lifelong friends. I would not be the person I am today without this experience." – Ed "Transition to college was a challenge. Phi Kaps gave me an immediate support system which made this transition easier. I was able to create an amazing network of friends; this really made my college experience." – Dan "The fraternity gave me connections and resources that I wouldn't have had otherwise. This was an amazing college experience that I will never forget." – Will Every single incoming student who walks through the doors of 2110 Lincoln Way can benefit from the Phi Kap experience. Iowa Xi membership is a transformative gift and legacy from the alumni who want to pay it forward. It adds value to a great college education. Recently, Iowa Xi was on the receiving end of a large, transformative bequest from JIM VICTOR '68. It came with the challenge to grow the Iowa Xi experience for future brothers. We are enthused by Jim's game-changing generosity. But, as Jim would have it, we are also challenged, both as individuals and as an overall organization, to transform ourselves to a higher level of operation. As Iowa Xi approaches its 100th anniversary, it is time to begin a new chapter in the history of Iowa Xi. To that end, here is a brief update on the progress of the Victor Gift Committee and Alumni Board related to the Jim Victor Endowment and plans for the chapter and our brothers. • Established a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt foundation to securely hold the Victor endowment and to make it easier for other alumni to invest in Iowa Xi. • Established a 501(c)(7) association for the alumni chapter to separate functions that had been performed by our legacy corporation, the Ames Phi Kappa Building Company. • Filed a DBA name with the state of Iowa for our 501(c)(2) legacy building corporation to operate as the Iowa Xi Building Corporation. Revised articles and bylaws will also be filed. • Formalized procedures and governance for stewarding the endowment to further the causes of Iowa Xi – To actively develop men to be effective servant leaders who passionately serve society, Fraternity and God. • Created plans for programs to encourage a higher level of communication and engagement with you, our Iowa Xi alumni. Our goals are to invite alumni to remain engaged with Iowa Xi brothers throughout their lives; to invite them to volunteer, serve in leadership positions, and give generously. As the Victor Gift Committee nears the end of its assigned tasks, we recognize that planning is one thing, doing is another. We encourage all alumni to consider contributing your time, talent, and resources to help Iowa Xi begin this new chapter, to make Iowa Xi strong for the next 100 years. Without your engagement and support, the transformative power of Jim Victor's gift will be lost. It literally is a "once every 100 years" event. You will receive more details of the proposed plans and changes this summer. Many of you will receive invitations to be actively engaged as leaders, committee members, and service volunteers. Please consider our motto when you are presented with these invitations: "Give, expecting nothing thereof." At Homecoming on October 23, the Alumni Board will host one of the most important annual general meetings of alumni since the Amician Club was chartered as Iowa Xi in 1924. You will elect new leaders, approve important motions, and ratify plans. You will receive more details about the transformative changes planned for a new chapter in Iowa Xi's history and how you can be involved. We hope you attend in person or virtually. Until then, we would love to hear from you about your college memories and your ideas about Iowa Xi's next 100 years. Respectfully submitted by the Victor Gift Committee.
