Justin Harper Ahh, the sounds of summer… Thunderstorms, cicadas, broken guitar strings, picks falling in sound holes… This week at the Cleveland County Arts Council, a group of students between 3rd and 7th grade participated in one of the first ever Summer Music Camps. I hosted a weeklong class named J. Justin Harper "The Puppy Pickers," which has been a crash course in all things guitar. Students are allowed to learn at their own pace in a community or classroom setting. It amazes me how naturally kids work together to master and learn things. To see almost a dozen kids holding on for dear life to play the E chord and rocking out to Alice Cooper's "School's Out" is a beautiful image. This workshop has focused on giving them the skills to turn the guitar into a lifelong instrument, as opposed to just another toy that sits in a child's room. We have learned how to read guitar tablature and chord charts to incite a desire to learn guitar independently. These days, the resources are abundant for a beginner; almost any song you want to learn has be transcribed into tablature or explained in a YouTube video. It has been an honor to teach such a talented group of students who really want to become guitar players. With the help of my trusty volunteer, Michael Laney, we hope to inspire a new generation of Van Halens, Hendrixs, and Claptons. (12 Weeks Tournament) PG EPIC productions The sounds of summer...
