Murphy is a member of the Fayetteville Cumberland Re-Entry Council. e Council helps men and women who have been through the criminal justice system make positive re-integration into society. e Council provides support and resources to help individuals obtain employment or education opportunities. "Ms. Murphy has certainly made a positive impact on our community," said Commission Vice Chair- man Glenn Adams who described her "as a unique and inspiring young woman who speaks passionate- ly about her volunteer efforts and her efforts to help those who are looking for a second chance in life." Murphy also founded the Youth Diverse Intervention Group which works to promote positive influence and actions in the lives of young people. She also volunteers with the Veterans Empowering Veterans Organization and helped organize a much-needed food bank. e Cumberland Cares Award recognizes individuals, groups and agencies that have made outstanding contributions toward a better quality of life for Cumberland County's citizens. Rural roundabout planned by NCDOT e N.C. Department of Transportation proposes turning the intersection of John McMillan and Chickenfoot Roads south of Hope Mills into a round- about. Construction is scheduled to start late next year. DOT says a roundabout should improve safety for drivers and pedestrians and alleviate congestion that can occur at the traditional intersection. e de- partment converted the intersection into a four-way stop in 2018 as a safety measure until a roundabout could be funded. e all-way conversion was the result of an analysis of 10 years of crash data. Nearly all 31 crashes that occurred there were the result of drivers on John McMillian Road failing to stop or yield the right of way. Hurricane season arrives with predictions of increased storm activity June through November is hurricane season. It's the time of year that most Atlantic tropical sys- tems form. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the average Atlantic hurricane season between 1991 and 2020 contained an average of 14 tropical storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes. is season is expected to bring above average and potentially destructive activity to hurricane-prone areas. According to e Weather Channel's hurricane expert, Dr. Rick Knabb, it is possibile that we could have more than one ma- jor hurricane come ashore this year. e most recent storm to impact greater Fayetteville was Hurricane Florence in 2018. It caused catastrophic damage in the Carolinas primarily as the result of flooding from torrential rainfall. Segra Stadium updates mask policy Beginning June 1st, Segra Stadium will ac- commodate the maximum number of allow- able fans, 4,786 people, according to Fayetteville Woodpeckers Assistant General Manager Pete Subsara. In alignment with local, state and CDC guidelines, patrons who are fully vaccinated will not be required to wear face masks inside the ballpark. All other health and safety measures will remain in place. Revisions to the seating capacity and other health and safety measures will be sub- ject to continuous review during the season.
