WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM 16 UCW MARCH 17-23, 2021 March is Women's His- tory Month. It is also the month where a lot of history happened at the Fayetteville Arsenal. In combining both observances, the Museum of the Cape Fear, in partnership with Shades of Our Past, is presenting a vir- tual program, "Hoop Skirts and Gunpowder: A Woman of the Fayetteville Arsenal," on March 20 at 2 p.m. e link to view the program will be available on the Museum's Facebook page @mu- seumofthecapefear and website www.museumofthecapefear. ncdcr.gov. "Hoop Skirts and Gunpowder: A Woman of the Fayetteville Arsenal" is one-of-a-kind, one- woman show by Lee Ann Rose, of Williamsburg, Virginia. On March 14, 1865, Gen- eral Sherman's Union Army destroyed the Fayetteville Arse- nal. Rose will portray Catherine Armstrong one of the 29 women who were employed at the Arse- nal. She will tell you about the work these young women did as well as her experiences and the dreaded day that it all ended. e presentation will include describing what women did in the arsenals, the jobs women performed in the Civil War, and comparisons between the freedoms and dangers arsenal workers had with the continued responsibility of domestic life. Was the danger worth this new experience of working outside the home, which allowed wom- en a little more independence? Rose says she finds "it inspir- ing to see how adaptable and strong women in history are, especially in a time of war, how they take on new roles with such ease and pride — from the camp follower in the Revolution, to the arsenal worker in the Civil War, to the Signal Corps opera- tor in World War I, and Rosie the Riveter in World War II." Lee Ann Rose is the co-owner of Shades of Our Past, LLC which provides historical education and entertainment ranging from America's founding to WWII. She got her eatre Degree at Davis and Elkins College and studied also in Richmond Col- lege in London, England. Lee Ann is not only an historical interpreter but a playwright writ- ing such plays as "Are We Not One" and " Back to Our Kitch- ens." She is currently also doing a one woman show called "Stow- away on D Day" about Martha Gellhorn. Lee Ann portrays Su- san B Anthony, Victoria Wood- hull and First Ladies Martha Washington, Mary Todd Lincoln and Edith Roosevelt. Rose has been doing character interpreta- tion for more than 25 years. "I am honored to bring stories of women whose lives have yet to be brought to light and to fill in the fabric of our nation's his- tory," she says. is project is supported by the Arts Council in part by con- tributions from businesses and individuals, and through grants from the City of Fayetteville, Cumberland County and the North Carolina Arts Council. e Museum of the Cape Fear Historical Complex, located on the corner of Bradford and Arsenal avenues in Fayetteville, is currently open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. e museum operates un- der the Division of State History Museums, Office of Archives and History, within the North Caro- lina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.
