Tuesday, May 14, 2013 – Daily News Audobon group May outings Altacal Audobon offers the following events in May and June: May Program - Restoration, management, monitoring and research at the Sacramento River NWR at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 20, at the Chico Creek Nature Center The Sacramento River NWR consists of 29 individual units and 10,146 acres along a 77-mile stretch of the Sacramento River from Red Bluff to Princeton. The Sacramento Valley has lost ~ 85 percent of the riparian vegetation which is critically important for fish, plants, wildlife and river system health. The restoration on the units has occurred in conjunction with many partners by converting flood-prone agricultural lands into riparian habitat. Joe Silveira is a Wildlife Biologist for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service since 1990 and is currently stationed at Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge Complex. Field Trips • May 19, Sunday - Morning Grebe Paddle at Thermalito Afterbay. In early spring the Western and Clark's Grebes arrive at the Thermalito Afterbay to breed, nest, and rear their young. They also have spectacular courtship displays, from weed dancing to rushing (running across the water). Paddling out into the afterbay and into protected coves, we'll have a good chance of seeing some of this behavior at a safe distance, while learning about habitat, food, nest colonies, and conservation efforts. The afterbay also attracts a variety of waterbirds, land birds, and raptors too. Meet at the Larkin Cove Launch off Larkin Rd/ Thermalito Afterbay, Oroville at 8:30 a.m. Bring your own kayak/canoe, water, snack, binoculars, and camera. Rain and high winds cancel. Limited to 15. Contact Jennifer Patten to sign up, 530-345-9356 jpchico@sbcglobal.net LEGAL NOTICE • June 1, Saturday - Birds and trees walk at CSU Butte Creek Ecological Preserve. Explore the native trees, shrubs and the birds of Butte Creek. This is a four to five mile intermediate hike along the creek and over some logs down to the pond. Bank Swallows, Cooper's Hawks, Yellow breasted Chats, and assorted warblers have been seen here in early summer. Turtles, otters and jumping salmon may also be seen. Bring sturdy shoes/boots, water, and snacks for this 3 hour hike. Meet at the parking lot of the preserve at 9 a.m. The preserve is on Honey Run Road about 3 miles off the Skyway, just past 1182. For information, contact Joseph O'Neil at josephoneil@earthlink.net. For all events visit www.altacal.org for more information or contact Altacal Audobon Publicity Chair Wayland Augur at (530) 5194724 or email wba@acm.org.
