The exhibit is a project of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) Foundation, and will be available to view by the public Thursday May 23 – Mon. June 3, 2013. "By hosting the exhibit, we hope we can reach out to Cleveland County women and raise awareness of what to look for with self exams and where to go to if you need a mammogram," said (Cleveland County Council on Aging/Neal Senior Center contact). A North Carolina college student created the Button Chair in 1998 as a tribute to the women in our state who have battled breast cancer. The chair features thousands of buttons, each belonging to a victim or survivor of the disease. The exhibit's most unique aspect is an interactive video highlighting the stories of five North Carolina women who have survived the disease. "Our hope is that through the Button Chair, women across North Carolina will learn more about the importance of breast cancer screenings and start the conversation with their sisters, mothers and friends to make sure we are all taking care of our health," said Kathy Higgins, BCBSNC Foundation president. The BCBSNC Foundation encourages women to learn more about the disease, know their body and what is normal for their breasts, and to follow guidelines for mammograms. Through the Button Chair, they strive to educate women across North Carolina about the role of early detection. Hosting the exhibit will be Cleveland County Council on Aging/Neal Senior Center The Cleveland County Council on Aging/Neal Senior Center mission statement is Quality of Life and Independent Living…Throughout the Lifespan To maintain the Senior Center as a focal point Promoting aging as a normal process, opening doors that improve the quality of life of older adults in Cleveland County.
