WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM 18 UCW JUNE 10-16, 2020 John Blackwell (a real fun guy!) & Staff and Management of Congratulates our 2020 Cumberland County High School Graduates Best Wishes on all your future endeavors! D e a r C a p e Fe a r C o l t s "C l a s s o f 2 0 2 0 ", First let me star t off by saying how proud I am of you, for facing adversity and not giving up! What star ted out as a regular senior year all changed March 13th. You went from attending games and doing the electric slide at the homecoming dance, to watching Nick winning his first wrestling state championship while Dallas was securing his third state championship. You were enjoying teachers getting their hair spray painted pink to raise money for cancer research at pep rallies, dressing up for spirit weeks, and rooting for Rose to win the dance off at the senior breakfast. It seemed right when we were solidifying our proposals, we got the call that school was being closed. The oppor tunities to sit around the lunch table just talking, riding to school together, or sitting in class was now gone. No advanced warning. You quickly had to learn how to log into class on your computer, while making sure your microphone was muted, and tr ying to grasp this new remote learning. You had the last par t of your senior year stripped away. Spring spor ts were gone. Prom was postponed. And the awards ceremony (the event you act like you don't want to attend and have your picture taken, but deep down you secretly enjoy the attention) was cancelled. Your grades even looked different with a PC-19 instead of A's and B's. But you persevered, you kept a positive attitude, and you were determined to graduate with as much normalcy as possible. I realize Class of 2020, that you feel cheated, angr y, frustrated, and depressed. You should. You didn't deser ve this. But please know, like our superintendent once said in a parentlink call, " Tough times never last, but tough people do!" And you will be stronger and more independent looking back on these tough times. As you move for ward to one of the Three E's; Enrolled in a post-secondar y school, Enlisted in one of the branches of the militar y, or Employed in a gainful career, make sure you use the lessons learned during this pandemic to be the ver y best. This is not an end, but a new chapter in your life and we have prepared you! I wish you the ver y best and I love each and ever y one of you! You make me proud to be a Cape Fear Colt! Now go out and show them that Colt Pride Never Stops! I am proud of you Class of 2020!
