2 THE ORACLE STANDING FIRM An Open Letter from Matthias Ebeyer '20 I write to you as one of the last seniors who is still active in the Zeta. Last year, the chapter hit a bit of a rough patch and we have been fighting ever since to keep Lambda Chi Alpha open at Indiana University. The university has thrown countless obstacles our way, but with the help of High Pi Joe Folkening and IHQ, we have overcome the adversity and are looking outstanding for the 2020-21 school year. Most of the brothers who remained after the membership review last year helped out with fall recruitment, so hats off to them. After fall recruitment, many brothers disassociated for various reasons. Nevertheless, we ended up initiating 18 associates into our bond. Many of these associates take pride in being a Lambda Chi, and some even took executive committee positions, including Alpha, Beta, and Tau. These men are motivated to return our chapter to its former glory. Due to this, I and another active senior, High Phi Carter Strode '20, have been able to take a backseat in spring 2020. The new brothers ran recruitment by themselves under High Delta Isaac Ebeyer '22 and they recruited 35 fantastic associates to our chapter. These new associates flocked to our no-hazing policy and our pledge to abolish the bystander mentality. I have only met these new associates a handful of times but there seems to be some natural born leaders ready to do whatever it takes to help Lambda Chi Alpha excel in the future. As I graduate in the spring with hopes of attending the Indiana University School of Medicine, I can sleep peacefully knowing I'm leaving the chapter in the capable hands of the 55 undergraduates. I have no doubt that they will laugh in the face of adversity and thrive in the upcoming years. I am extremely excited to see how far they will come when they move into the chapter house next fall and we can all visit for alumni weekend. On a bit of a personal note, every alumnus of Alpha Omicron Zeta at Indiana University owes sincere gratitude to our eight-year High Pi. Joe Folkening has gone above and beyond the call of duty, frequently missing time to be with his own family, to act as a lifeline for our chapter. I can personally attest to the countless hours he and I have spent filling out tedious paperwork, hosting mandatory risk management sessions, etc., not even to mention his financial donations to keep us afloat. I truly believe that if he was not our High Pi, Indiana University would have pulled the plug on us last year. On top of that, he has been a rock for me though the highs and the lows as I dealt with being a High Alpha for two years. I can honestly say that I would not be the man I am today if it was not for Brother Folkening. As I graduate here in a few months, I will never forget what he has done for me and the chapter. In closing, I appreciate every alumnus who has provided for the chapter in any way, shape, or form. My time here at IU would not have been the same without Lambda Chi Alpha, and I will do everything I possibly can to ensure the fidelity of our chapter so that this same opportunity is available to other freshmen who have no idea they will go Greek, like myself. Remember, gentlemen, Lambda Chi Alpha has a mission to perform second to none and it is our responsibility to teach by example. In ZAX, Matthias Ebeyer '20 What Will Your Legacy Be? Brothers of Lambda Chi Alpha, Since 1926, our castle on the hill has stood through the many peaks and valleys of our country's history—from the roaring '20s through the Great Depression, from WWII to the turbulent '60s, from Watergate to the age of today's incredible technology. And like our country, Alpha Omicron has survived, always standing tall for the next class of young men to serve, lead, and prepare for life after graduation. This responsibility was granted to us by those that came before we arrived. They gave us the opportunity called Alpha- Omicron. It is with that in mind that we must look to our 100+ year history to regain our future and LEGACY. Many of us recall that 1210 was almost gone in the early '70s. We survived. Like all century homes, our house has always needed repairs, and every member knows this. Many of our brothers have been very generous with their financial support and labor over the years to keep 1210 alive. Membership has risen and fallen, yet quality men come in, make a difference, and embrace an opportunity unmatched by any other place on campus. That has NEVER changed and is why we must unite to keep Lambda Chi Alpha at 1210 E. 3rd Street alive and available for generations to come. As always, together we will succeed. "Naught without Labor." In ZAX, Jamie Hunter '82 Mike Howard '84
