MU CHAPTER OF DELTA KAPPA EPSILON | COLGATE UNIVERSITY | VOL. LVI, NO. II SPRING 2020 Yon Clarion Bell NEWSLETTER OF THE MU OF DKE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION, INC. A Strong Alumni Bond Marc Toglia '85 and Mitchell Burman '85 on Why Mu of DKE Still Matters Today M arc Toglia '85 and Mitchell Burman '85 knew they belonged at Colgate. After both applied early decision, they found their ways to Mu of DKE and became roommates sophomore year. Together they formed the bonds of a lifelong friendship and continue to keep DKE, Colgate, and their Mu brothers in their lives. Mitch's experience in the Chapter was shorter than most due to studying abroad in London for a year and graduating early. This shorter stint did not prevent DKE from having a meaningful impact on his life, especially professionally, as many alumni provided invaluable and encouraging advice to Mitch. While college life in the '80s was challenging from a lack of communication with friends and family back home, Marc enjoyed living independently with his DKE brothers. They relied on problem solving, cooperation, and responsibility to keep things at the Temple running smoothly. While Marc and Mitch had different individual experiences with DKE as undergraduates, they both agree that staying involved as alumni is important and rewarding. Mitch recently started attending reunions and has been very impressed with the young alumni and the great work Sean Devlin '05 has been doing. "I believe DKE is still an important force in the Colgate community," he added. "Being a DKE has added a vertical dimension to my relationship with Colgate," Marc explained. "Whenever I return to the campus for reunion, I am instantly connected with other DKEs young and old. Instead of being limited to spending time with other alumni that straddle my years at Colgate, I have been able to relate and communicate with a broader group of individuals on a deeply personal level. I think that it is important that the university recognizes how organizations such as DKE enhance our bonds to each other, and to the college." Mitch recently retired after building and selling his small analytics consulting firm to McKinsey & Co., a project he worked closely on with Steve Bandler '85. He enjoys traveling with his wife and four children and spending time at their house in North Queensland, Australia, when not at home in Dover, Massachusetts. Marc is a physician specializing in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive pelvic surgery. He lives in Philadelphia with his wife, where they raised two children. In his free time, he enjoys being on or near the water fishing and boating, and has a passion for cooking, travel, and good wine. In Their Own Words: What are you most proud of in your career and family life? MITCH: Career highlights include: • Building a successful consulting firm that I sold to McKinsey & Co. • Creating an algorithm that was tens of thousands of times faster to design efficient production lines that increased productivity at Hewlett Packard by billions of dollars. • Teaching at MIT and Penn. Family highlights: • Married a great woman who was a dealmaker at Bain Capital and migrated to being an awesome mom. • Four healthy, very individual children. • I managed to take at least three months every year to travel with the family. MARC: I have been very fortunate to help so many patients through important and challenging times in their lives, and to be able to train future generations of physicians for the challenges that lie ahead. I have also been very fortunate to have a strong and close family. My wife, Maria, and I have raised two great kids whom we still spend a lot of time with traveling and enjoying all life has to offer. Marc Toglia '85 and Mitchell Burman '85 Being a DKE has added a vertical dimension to my relationship with Colgate." - MARC TOGLIA '85
