Kuehn St. #9 • 208-431-2547 • 208-431-0111 WE'VE MOVED! By Jackie Deal Bluegrass music - the music is fast, fl ashy, high-energy. It's almost impossible to sit quietly and snooze during a Bluegrass concert, espe- cially the Arizona Connection. They laugh and have fun while producing some foot-tapping music. And you'll have fun too. Haskell Poteet, the tallest, and Wan- da Poteet, the shortest, make beauti- ful music together and they've been doing it for over 50 years in duets and trios; their harmony is perfect. Sherry Bensmiller, banjo player has ten fi ngers on each hand and at least a ten string banjo. Well, it must be, to get all the music out of it that she does. Her fi ngers fl y, and on "Dueling Banjoes," her fl ying fi ngers matched Haskell's guitar picking. The Arizona Connection Bluegrass Band Sherry was a bronc buster and ro- deo clown. Her family was active in both rodeo and music. She said she got tired of clowning around and be- gan concentrating on playing banjo. Uncle Fud (Bill Barker) is the char- acter of the band in bib overalls, an orange polka dot tie, a red fl ower in his hat and green and black patterned socks; he'd stand out in any crowd. Most Blue Grass is bright and sparkly but the somber, soulful "Would You Send Your Best An- gel For Momma," a trio of Haskell, Wanda and Sherry, could bring tears to your eyes. Mike Boyd (Boomer) the bass player, is from Vancouver Island, Canada and has played in three dif- ferent bands in Canada. He said he drove truck for 40 years and when he retired he had more time to play. Uncle Fud (Bill Barker) says he's "done everything but brain sur- gery." When he was fourteen he cut his thumb almost clear off and his father thought banjo playing would be good therapy. For $14 he bought a guitar from Sears and Roebuck and Bill was on his way. He's had his own band, "The Brush Creek Boys" and played in a Band in Tennessee, "Now and Then." The Arizona Connection will be at the Quartzsite Improvement As- sociation (QIA) on Wed. January 22nd, 7 p.m. for only $5.00. QIA is located at 235 E. Ironwood. 928- 927-6325. OPEN YEAR-ROUND! LARGE LOTS! ~ FREE WiFi ~ Laundromat ~ Thrift Shop ~ Gifts & Antiques 455 E. A group called the Phone Tree is part of the Quartzsite Neighborhood Watch. What it does is check on the welfare of you every day. It can be done by a phone call or text. We all know someone who has fallen and could not get up for some reason and laid there for days. This will hopefully eliminate that from happening. When you ask to join you will be asked a few questions and then you will check in every day before 9 am so we know you are ok. If you would like to be part of the Phone Tree call 480-286-8373. Thank you for the wonder- ful group of people who have been volunteering to make this happen! Sign up for the Phone Tree Welfare Check WILL YOU ACCEPT THE CHALLENGE? To read your Bible Daily? To read the entire Bible this year? It will take about 15 min. a day to hear what God is saying. Quartzsite Church of Christ
