Six hundred miles long from its source in the mountains of southwestern New Mexico to its confl uence with the Colorado River above Yuma, the Gila has been an important avenue for the movement of birds, animals, plants, and peo- ples across the desert for millennia. Many cultures have sprung up on its banks, and millions of people de- pend on the river today – whether they know it or not. Gregory, author of the prizewinning book Gila: The Life and Death of an American Riv- er, will present a biography of this vital resource, drawing on Native American stories, pioneer memoirs, the writings of modern naturalists such as Aldo Leopold and Edward Abbey, and many other sources. Think of it as 70 million years of history packed into an entertaining and informative hour! Our next fi eld trip will be on De- cember 18 to Salome and the Har- quehala Mine. We will be meeting at the Chamber of Commerce in Sa- lome at 10 am. Our fi eld trips are on the 3rd Wednesday of each month, and are free to members and $3 for non-members. Watch for announce- ments of other trips… we will be go- ing to the Planet Ranch in January. Contact Lynn Stimson at 928-916- 4562 for more information.
