PI DEUTERON CHAPTER OF PHI GAMMA DELTA AT THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS • FALL 2019 FIJI BUILDS ON GROWTH Pi Deuteron Completes Renovations and Welcomes New Advisor Board President T he fall semester has kicked off and with that comes a renewed energy for our House Corporation Board. We are pleased to report that over the summer we replaced all the windows on the front of the Chapter House. The new, updated windows are more energy efficient and they look fantastic. This completes phase two of our plan to replace all the windows. Phase three, which includes replacing the windows on the east side of the house, is next on our list. We are also working on a plan to replace the parking lot. Thanks to the hard work of the Undergraduate Chapter with recruitment efforts, and the generous support of Graduate Brothers who made our extensive Chapter House renovations possible, the house has been at full capacity for the last two years. The House Corporation unanimously approved a plan increasing Chapter House rent two years ago. By doing this, we have been able to continue paying down the mortgage balance. This is all part of our efforts to extinguish our debt load. I am pleased to report that Matt Johnson '18 is the new President of the Board of Chapter Advisors. Matt served as both Recruitment Chairman and, later, Chapter President of Pi Deuteron while he was an Undergraduate Brother. Presently, he is an Associate Director with Falcon Wealth Advisors in Kansas City. Matt's leadership experience at Pi Deuteron will serve the Chapter well, but we still need Graduate Brothers who are willing to serve on the board. If you are interested in serving on the Board of Chapter Advisors, please contact Matt at (913) 326-1900 or mattj_25@yahoo.com. Thank you to the Graduate Brothers who attended our Pig Dinner on October 25th. We had a strong turnout this year and hope to continue that trend moving forward. It's always great seeing Undergraduate and Graduate Brothers sharing stories with one another. If you were unable to attend, please visit the Chapter House soon to see the progress of our renovations. Fraternally, Andy Morrison '87 amorrison@kuendowment.org House Corporation President Perge! Kevin Kuster '91 Helps People Around the World with Watts of Love A s the Director of Content and Senior Photography Editor at Playboy Magazine for nearly two decades, Kevin Kuster '91 had a job that made many of his Phi Gamma Delta Brothers envious. Kevin loved being able to fulfill his passion for photography at Playboy, but he wanted to make more of a difference in the world with his artistic abilities. In 2012, the light bulb came on for Kevin when he was making a trip with his sister and brother-in-law to Ilin Island in the south China sea. They were delivering 1,000 solar lights to the remote island, which was one of the poorest in the Philippines and had no electricity, roads, sanitation, doctors, or government assistance. The trip marked the beginning of Watts of Love, a global solar lighting nonprofit which brings people the power to raise themselves out of the darkness of poverty. "Initially, we were a three-person organization, but as we raised more donations, we've been able to bring on more staff," Kevin said. "It's kind of a multiplier (Continued on page 2) Let There Be Light The windows on the front and west side of the house were replaced.
