T he summer of 2019 will certainly be a benchmark period in the history of Alpha Omicron. The Chapter house at 1309 W. University was demolished to make way for a completely new home at the same location. There is great excitement and energy surrounding the new house and a successful fall recruitment added to the exhilarating atmosphere. And while plans are moving forward, the process has not been without challenges and stresses to the timeline. Late spring/early summer brought unanticipated delays from contracted providers, which caused the lender to back out of the loan. But thanks to the skilled and dedicated work of our House Corporation Board and their team, a new lender was secured. After negotiating the best possible terms, loan documents were signed on August 10 at the Alumnae Tea. In addition to a new lender, a new interior designer was hired and our own Kristin Grant Check '06 was brought on board to create and advance the interior vision of the project. With a new interior designer in place, architectural plans could be completed by Tobin Newcomb, Newcomb Associates Architects & Engineers Inc., and Miller-Tippens Construction Company finalized their contract and proceeded with the project. "Miller-Tippens was able to see the long-term vision of the project," said Teresa Colpitts Smith '80, House Corporation President. And just as things were moving forward, unanticipated steel tariffs drove construction costs up, threatening the budget. "We continue to work with Miller-Tippins to reduce construction costs with the goal of reducing the debt burden," Smith said. "Support Building Our Legacy Progress Continues for the AO Educational Housing Fund is a relevant and critical component in keeping that debt manageable," she added. Construction has started, but that does not mean the need for funding has ended. Having adequate support is vital to offset unforeseen overruns and will ultimately affect the interior finishes and fixtures of the house. Despite the speedbumps encountered to this point, anticipation is still high and enthusiasm has not been deterred. Animated video of the new house was unveiled to prospective new members during fall recruitment and the response was overwhelmingly positive.
