A PUBLICATION OF THE ZETA PHI CHAPTER OF BETA THETA PI FALL 2019 INSIDE: Zeta Phi Earns Chancellor's Excellence Award 2 2019 Zeta Phi Brothers 3 Save the Date 4 Brotherhood Spans Years and Classes Zeta Phi Remains Strong I want to share a recent experience that demonstrated once again the strong fraternal bonds of Zeta Phi. I was invited to a golf outing in Texas by my daugh- ter's father-in-law. For some time, my host had men- tioned one of his neighbors, Dave McLaughlin '74, had been periodically showing him copies of the Zeta Phi newsletter where I had written articles. On a visit to Tex- as, my host invited Dave over for a drink one evening. I had never met Dave before, but it was pleasant to discuss our Zeta Phi experience. We exchanged some war stories about pledge training and social life. e experience reminded me that even though years separate our time at 520 College, it's always a rewarding and interesting experience to meet a fellow Zeta Phi and reminisce. I urge you not to pass up those opportunities. House Corporation Matters e house corporation maintains an interactive relation- ship with the chapter and works to preserve the fine heritage we have. Several members of the house corpora- tion were active in working with the university on new rules and regulations for fraternities; we still have a few pending. It is clear that we are in a new environment and many of the new regulations are well founded but many are purely bureaucracy. We can expect to receive more oversight from the university as well as the Beta General Fraternity. Hard work and patience are on the horizon for the alumni and active chapter to comply with many of the new guidelines and rules. Only time will tell if we can continue the spirit and independence that has made our chapter great for the last 149 years. Historically it has always been difficult for young men to follow all the rules, but in the environment of today's society, it is even more of a challenge. e finances of the house corporation remain strong. Our house remains full, generating strong revenue that has lowered our debt to about $2,500,000 as of June 30. is will be further reduced with a large payment in the early fall bringing our balance significantly lower than what had originally been projected back in 2012. Our loan matures in the upcoming fiscal year, prompting discus- sions with the bank about a renewal. e only low point in our finances is the amount of delinquencies. Although not large in comparison to our total billings, there will be a refocus and emphasis placed on collections this year. Corrections are in motion to redirect our course. ere will be a re-emphasis on academics this coming year aer a fourth-place finish in spring semester. While our chapter GPA was competitive at 3.245, several other fraternities are challenging us for campus leadership in the classroom. We will push harder this semester to close the gap between the few hundredths of a point that can get us to first place.
