BOONEVILLE BEARCATS 2018 RECORD 16-0, 7-0 3A-1 Conference COACH Scott Hyatt RETURNING STARTERS 5 offense, 5 defense KEY PLAYERS QB Evan Schlinker (Sr., 5-10, 155), HB/LB Andrew Robertson (Sr., 5-7, 160), FB/LB Cam Brasher (Sr., 5-9, 200), DL Cort Mizell (Sr., 6-1, 230), TE/LB An- thony McKesson (Sr., 6-1, 230), RB/CB Gabe Fennell (Sr., 5-10, 160), OL Ethan Pirraglia (Sr., 6-2, 260), OL Domenic Helms (Sr., 5-10, 260) THE SKINNY Booneville enters its 100th season of football looking to defend its state championship, the fourth in program history (2018, 2013, 2000, 1986) … Evan Schlinker took over at quarterback Week 1 last season because of an injury and tossed 14 touchdowns, a program-best in a single season … Andrew Robertson had 1,000 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground in just 95 carries and will get more touches this year … Cam Brasher leads the defense again and had a team- high 97 tackles last year … Gabe Fennell (25 tackles, five interceptions) is the lone returning starter in sec- ondary … Bearcats outscored opponents by 440 points last season … Booneville's play-making defense had 31 interceptions a year ago … The defense allowed less than 12 points per game on average in 2018 … Boon- eville graduated more than 12 seniors, including five all-state players, from last year's team … The Bearcats finished second in Class 3A at the State Weight Meet in April lifting 4,605 pounds, falling just short of Rison's 4,710 total. COACH SPEAK "These seniors feel like it is their turn. They feel like whatever happens this year is the legacy they will be leaving. They are focused on that. We lost a lot of seniors from last year's team. There is no substitute for that experience they had. But the expectations are always high. We want to make another deep playoff run." — Harold McIlvain II • Special to the NWA Democrat-Gazette SCHEDULE Aug. 30 ....... at Clarksville Oct. 11. ....... Greenland* Sept. 6 ................... THE SKINNY Coach Max Washausen begins his fourth season and the Pirates' four wins last year was the most since they won five in 2012. … Junior halfback Kelin Mitchell returns, after rushing for 978 yards and 3 TDs as a sophomore and will spark a rushing attack that accounted for more than 3,100 yards last season, but he can also be an asset as a receiver. … The Pirates should be buoyed by sophomore and junior classes, which earned back-to-back conference titles in junior high and combined for a 17-1 record. … Washausen called sophomore running back Darryl Kattich (6-0, 180) a "game-changer" in the backfield. … Senior Calloway Henslee saw playing time a year ago at quarterback, but sophomore Cody Dickens and junior Nick Moore give them good depth at the position. … Henslee's leadership gives him the edge under center, but Moore and Dickens could also play receiver, which could help fuel a more potent passing game. COACH SPEAK "We really feel good about this year's team. Not a lot of people talk about us," Washausen said. "But we beat Mansfield last year and Mansfield went on to win a playoff game. We feel like we've got an outstanding group of young players coming up. The difference now is we have some depth now. We have some kids we can put in there if we have some get tired or go down with an injury. The overall team chemistry is way better than it's been since I've been here. We're finally looking like a football program with 30-plus kids showing up for workouts consistently. Also having some stability I think helps, these sophomores were seventh-graders when I came here. They know our expectations and they've been running our system for a while now." — Paul Boyd • @NWAPaulB SCHEDULE Aug. 30 .... at JC Westside Oct. 11 ................ Paris* Sept. 6 ...... COACH SPEAK "I missed coaching. I'm not really an office guy. When Charleston called, I said 'you bet; let's do this.' That's the way it worked out. I'm really excited about this opportunity. I like to have the expectations of doing well. I didn't have that at Waldron. We are excited about this season. We have been unlucky with injuries, but we are trying to get better." — Harold McIlvain II • Special to the NWA Democrat-Gazette SCHEDULE Aug. 30 .......... Melbourne# Oct. 11 .......... THE SKINNY Junior Gabe Wilson wasn't the starting quar- terback a year ago, but got some valuable experience which should pay dividends this season. … Senior receiver Zeylan Bryant caught 54 passes for 897 yards and 9 TDs, not to mention three rushing TDs. … The Pirates have good depth and speed at the receiver spots and plenty of experience overall, including six or eight three-year starters. … Junior Jett Dennis rushed for 439 yards and 9 TDs and is expected to have a big year. … Tackles Luke Osburn and Hunter Martin anchor the offensive line as each will start for the third straight year. … Coach Lee Larkan is hopeful to keep two-way players to a minimum, but especially Wilson. COACH SPEAK "Last year we were a touchdown away from being second in the conference," Larkan said. "We lost a close game on the last play of the game to Mansfield who everybody's picking to be the best. And we got down to the last against Lamar. It's the first time since I've been here we have speed at every receiver spot, speed in the backfield. I think offensively we can be very good and defensively we will be improved. If we stay healthy and play with the right attitude we think we can play with anybody." — Paul Boyd • @NWAPaulB SCHEDULE Sept. 6 .................at Elkins Oct. 11 ..... at Booneville* Sept. 13 ......Mountainburg Oct. 18 ...............
