J 3, 2010 .DM. Quartzsite Elementary School Graduation ceremonies By Joanne Winer The Quartzsite Elementary School held graduation ceremonies on May 16, 2010 for the 8th grade students. After the procession and the Pledge of Allegiance, School Superintendant Mrs. Jacque Price welcomed all the parents and friends of the six stu- dents graduating. Guest speaker Pas- tor Bruce Swart from the Assembly of God Church gave a speech urging the students to never give up on their dreams no matter how hard it seems, sometimes, to keep working towards their goals. Salutatorian Clark Barnett and Vale- dictorian Brooklynne Kilwein both spoke of how much they appreciated all the help they got from their parents and teachers. Special awards were then presented by 8th grade teacher, Ms. Woodall and Mrs. Price. The Ce- lia Winer Memorial Award went to Brooklynne Kilwien, and the Danny Scott Memorial Award went to Alicia Coen. Ms. Woodall spoke to her class, giv- ing them awards refl ecting their con- tributions to the class. She encouraged them to reach for the stars and never give up their hopes and dreams for their futures. The event, the second annual Flag Retirement Ceremony is sponsored by Operation Hero Comfort. The Cub Scout Troop 116 will be participating and doing the ceremony. Protocol requires that any American, Military Service or State Flag should not be fl own if it is tattered or dam- aged. It should be burned in a spe- cial ceremony, and the ashes buried once the grommets are taken out of the ashes. Operation Hero Comfort held their fi rst ceremony last year, where almost 500 fl ags were retired and burned. The grommets that were kept were sent over to the troop units adopted by Operation Hero Comfort. They are considered good luck charms to the troops who carry them. This year, the ceremony will take place in the evening, since it was so hot last year in the afternoon. After the brief ceremony, there will be refresh- ments served at the pavilion. Anyone who has a fl ag that needs to be retired can drop it off at the Town Hall, Fire Station, Reader’s Oasis Bookstore, La Casas de Quartzsite offi ce, or Quartz- site Business Chamber of Commerce. You can also bring your fl ag to the cer- emony if you wish. Everyone is invited to come out and participate in the ceremony to honor the fl ag and our veterans.
