April 2019 | Susan G. Komen More Than Pink Walk | Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette | 9 Like Dr. Miller, the Komen Ozark Foundation creates "thrivers, not just survivors," to help breast cancer survivors stay cancer free. To advance this goal, Dr. Miller studied how environments and physical activity affected the energy levels of patients in remission. Survivors were asked to maintain a certain level of physical activity throughout each week for the duration of the study to better gauge how physical activity benefits cancer survivors. The four pillars of the Komen Ozark initiative are research, care, community, and action, and similarly, all four of those vital pillars are evident in Dr. Miller's work. Not only has Dr. Miller worked incredibly hard to fight and cure breast cancer patients, but her caring work continues even when patients are in remission. The luncheon went on to honor and award the top individual and team fundraisers throughout the region, many of who were breast cancer survivors. These regional teams raised more than $403,600 to support breast cancer research, early detection and prevention and to help find a cure. Several of the fundraisers and speakers at the event were brave enough to share their very touching personal stories of how breast cancer had affected their lives. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, and the Susan G. Komen Ozark foundation works hard every day to cut that number in half. The six grant recipients will use the funds raised by the teams to help prevent and cure breast cancer in the Ozark region, and to assist families affected by the devastating disease. The breakthrough research done by the Komen Ozark Foundation will surely save many lives and to help meet critical needs in our community.
